The wireless speaker market is alive and well at the moment, with new models being released all the time. American audio brand Definitive Technology has thrown its hat into the wireless speaker ring by adopting DTS Play-Fi technology for a range of wireless speakers.

Definitive Technology’s line of wireless speakers includes the W7, a tiny cube that’s even smaller than the excellent Naim Musa Qb I reviewed recently. It’s about the same size as the basic Mass Fidelity system I looked at a while back.
Inside this little cube, about the size of two McDonald’s Big Mac cartons stacked on top of each other, is a set of speaker units that can pump out a lot of sound. The W7 uses what is called a Tri-Polar speaker configuration. The W7 has four separate one-inch aluminum dome tweeters. Two units fire forward, while one on each side creates a wider soundstage. To add weight to the sound, there’s a four-inch front-firing mid-bass woofer, while two side-mounted passive bass radiators provide four inches of low-end sound for a sound that’s a lot bigger than you’d think. is sounds like a very small unit. A small shelf on the front of the unit has a small row of control buttons if you don’t want to use your phone or tablet to control things.
Definitive Technology W7 uses DTS Play-Fi technology for its signal reception. This open architecture streaming technology can support up to 16 mono speakers or 8 stereo pairs. Well, at least that’s the theory. How well DTS Play-Fi works in practice depends somewhat on the quality and location of your wireless router. Since all music streams must go through your router and not through a mesh network, you may experience data issues. I wasn’t able to test streaming to eight pairs of stereo speakers, but I think there might be practical issues with so much data with so many routers. Also, the usual warnings about thick walls and distance of the W7 from the wireless router apply.
Getting started with W7 is very easy. You simply turn on the device and use your iOS or Android device to connect to the W7’s WiFi signal. Then, using the free DTS Play-Fi app, you can select your router’s WiFi signal, and after entering the router’s password, you can tap into everything the DTS Play-Fi app has to offer. If you want to stream music from any other source to your iOS device, then you’re out of luck, because unlike AirPlay, you can’t select DTS Play-Fi to stream from any legacy app. This is something that Certain Technology can overcome by adding a Bluetooth receiver to the device. Personally, I wish they would add BBC Radio iPlayer to the list of supported streaming platforms to make radio access easier.
As for the W7’s sound, it’s generous in the volume department, and clear on the upper drives. I imagine it lacks a bit of bass and is a bit boxy, but that’s just a limitation of the W7’s physical size. It seems to have a tendency to be a little bright, but that can be an advantage if you’re playing music in a room full of people with soft furnishings. The W7 always has a tight control over the tempo of the music, and I really liked the way it handled Sade’s classic Diamond Life album. He had a lot of control.

As well as being able to stream music from your Android or iOS device, the W7 has a 3.5mm analogue input so you can feed from any source. There is also an optical TOSlink that you can use to connect a CD player. There is also a USB port and you can use it to charge or recharge your phone/tablet while playing music. Unfortunately, the USB port can’t be used to connect a hard drive or memory stick, which seems like a missed opportunity. An Ethernet port is another useful addition if your home is wired and can help alleviate some of the potential problems of wireless data congestion or being too far away from the router’s signal.

The big advantage of using DTS Play-Fi is that you can stream different audio streams to different rooms around your home, or just have the same music playing on all speakers. Streaming different music to different rooms works well, and organizing all your home entertainment from your phone or tablet can be a lot of fun.
There are a lot of great wireless speakers on the market, and DTS Play-Fi makes a big push to introduce a true multi-room streaming standard. The quality of the Definitive Technology W7 is very good, although the claims of streaming to eight stereo speakers can be more difficult if you use the type of router that many cable and broadband providers include as part of their Internet offering. The W7 does a good job of music with great detail and attack. It’s competitively priced, and since the W7 uses DTS Play-Fi, it will work alongside any Play-Fi compatible set. This would be an ideal audio device for the bedroom or kitchen.
