New Audio Speaker: Bose Soundlink Wireless Mobile Speaker « Tech Bytes For Tea?

For such a small and portable Bluetooth speaker, the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile sounds great and plays incredibly loud without distortion. It also has a built-in rechargeable battery, an auxiliary input, a rugged design and the ability to replace covers (including one of them).

If you’re willing to pay a premium, the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker is the best portable Bluetooth speaker on the market.

Bose, create innovative products? Of course, the company has some really nice headphones and decent sound systems that cost a bit more. But Boze? Since when has Bose been game changers?

Because it came out with its compact Bluetooth speaker, the SoundLink Wireless Mobile, right then. No, it’s not an iPhone or anything, but it might just be the iPhone of portable Bluetooth speakers.

For the uninitiated, Bluetooth speakers allow you to stream music and other audio wirelessly from any smartphone or tablet (including the iPad). No network configuration required. it’s just a simple pairing procedure and whatever you’re playing on your phone or tablet is sent wirelessly to the speakers, whether it’s MP3 music, Spotify, Rdio, a baseball game or a video soundtrack.

Bluetooth speakers have been around for years, so what makes Bose so special? Well, it comes down to how small it is and how much sound it makes, and it sounds impressive. Looks like Bose is taking some cues from Apple. Along with a compact form factor and clean, sleek design, the SoundLink Wireless Mobile, starting at $300, features a magnetic protective cover and combo stand that automatically turns off the speaker when closed. . Are you familiar?

Oh, and like the iPad 2’s Smart Cover, the SoundLink Wireless Mobile’s cover comes in two varieties: nylon and leather. But you get leather from the get-go if you step up to the top-of-the-line speaker option, which costs an extra $50 and features what the company calls “automotive-grade” chrome trim.

Should you buy that fancy silver model or should you stick with the standard black model with a dark gray nylon cover for $300? We can’t answer that, but honestly, you can’t go wrong with any model. And, not surprisingly, Bose sells optional nylon and leather covers in a wider range of colors for $30 and $50, respectively, if you want to make a change later.

The first thing you notice when you pick up the SoundLink Wireless Portable Speaker is that despite its small size, it’s a bit heavy, weighing in at 2.78 pounds. It measures 5 inches tall, 9.5 inches wide, and a scant 1.9 inches thick.

That depth, or lack thereof, is actually the most impressive part of the design. But while the SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speakers look sleek, stylish, maybe a little too sleek, and suitable for indoor listening, Bose points out just how durable and sturdy the unit is. The company says it has extensively tested the product and even put it in a chamber and exposed it to simulated salt air fog. So yes, this is meant to be a portable outdoor product.

Portability is enhanced by the built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which is good for 3 to 4 hours of use with high volume between charges.

SoundLink Wireless Mobile has a wireless range of up to 30 feet and works with any A2DP Bluetooth device, including almost all smartphones including the iPad. On the back, you’ll find a standard 3.5mm audio input (via a separate cable) for connecting other audio devices that don’t offer Bluetooth, such as the iPod Nano.

We had no problem pairing an iPhone, an Android phone, and an iPad 2 with the speaker. Just long press the Bluetooth button on the top of the speaker and it goes into pairing mode. After selecting “Bose SoundLink Wireless” in the Bluetooth settings menu on your phone or other device, you should be able to connect to the speaker wirelessly and stream audio within seconds.

At some point, we drifted away from the Android phone for a few seconds. It was an instructive reminder that Bluetooth, like all wireless technologies, does not have the 100 percent reliability of a wired connection.

Another note. The SoundLink Wireless Mobile doesn’t offer speakerphone capabilities like the Jawbone Jambox, for example. Could it offer this feature one day? Probably not, considering there’s no built-in microphone that we know of. However, there is a Micro-USB port on the back of the speaker labeled “service” for firmware updates; Bose says it will offer software updates to ensure the speaker is compatible with future phones.

It should be noted that the SoundLink Wireless Mobile speaker does not come with a remote control. Because you don’t need that, because you can control the volume and everything else from your smartphone.

That said, we plugged in an iPhone 3G with a non-functional version of iOS and found that the volume control didn’t work, so it’s possible you’re running into something with the age of your phone.

At the product launch, Bose talked about the engineering challenges of getting good sound from a very compact speaker, and over Bluetooth, because Bluetooth compression degrades sound quality.

If you want to see what’s going on inside the speaker, the speaker’s design of four low-profile neodymium transducers (mid and high frequencies) and dual passive radiators (bass) is detailed on Bose’s website.

While the modern hardware design is a major factor in the speaker’s sound, there’s also some nice software running in the background to process what goes into the speaker and make it sound as good as possible.

The results are amazingly good. As we said, the speaker is incredibly loud for its size. This thing can fill an average sized room with sound and blow away a $200 Jawbone Jambox. What is impressive is that the sound does not distort at higher volumes. You can rock the Bose and the bass is well sustained and the speaker does so without shaking or shaking.

We played Wilco’s new album, The Whole Love, and the smoothest acoustic guitar track was as rich and detailed as you’d get from a bigger speaker. Then we hit hip-hop, and our old standby test track, Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” was pretty solid, but when we cranked up the volume, the heavy bassline died down a bit, or maybe it became more subdued. it’s good

After playing a lot of other music, the reviewer tested the SoundLink Wireless here with a panel of other editors, and all were impressed with how loud it played for its size and how good it sounded, especially with a small Bluetooth speaker.

Some have noted that the bass lacks the oomph they’d like, but it’s not fair to expect subwoofer-level performance from a speaker the size of a hardcover book.

As for battery life, Bose rates the unit at 3 to 4 hours of loud playback, but says you can get double that at “normal listening levels.” In other words, you should be fine listening to light on the porch or patio most of the day. But if you’re hosting a party, you’ll probably want to fully charge the speaker and plug it in somewhere if the party goes on for a long time.

What can we say, we were surprised! It’s not often that a product comes together and blows away the competition in its category, but that’s what the Bose SoundLink Wireless speakers have done.

This guy isn’t as small as the $200 Jawbone Jambox, and it’s a little more than twice as heavy. It also doesn’t offer the speaker capabilities of that product. But it plays a lot better and it plays a lot louder.

It’s also bigger and more expensive than the Bose $200 Soundmatters FoxL v2, but we think it sounds better than that Bose model.
