What is the best product made by Bose? It’s hard to say, but a case can be made for the company’s 2013 compact Bluetooth speaker SoundLink Mini, which offers impressive build quality and sound for its size, and at a not-inconsiderate price of $200 (£170 and AU$299). .
The Bose SoundLink Mini II is a sleek, compact wireless Bluetooth speaker that sounds great for its small size. It has good build quality with a unibody aluminum enclosure and includes a charging cradle that you can plug in.

Bose Soundlink Mini Bluetooth Speaker Review
Now we get the new SoundLink Mini II, which retails for the same price, comes in two colors – Carbon and Pearl – and aims to fix some of the original Mini’s shortcomings while adding some new features. In battery life.
The new 1.5-pound (0.67kg) model looks almost identical to its predecessor — good, because it’s one of the sharpest-looking small speakers — but it now has a built-in microphone for speakerphone capabilities. Another improvement is its 10-hour battery rating, up from 7 hours for the previous model.
Rounding out the improvements: the speaker now charges via a standard USB cable instead of a proprietary AC adapter, a notable change. It “charges with most USB power sources,” says Bose. It also includes a charging cradle, which can be used as a device at home. (I personally always leave the cradle connected to the USB charging cable provided by Bose, and then carry a second micro-USB cable and charger for the road.)
As I said about the original SoundLink Mini, it looks like an Apple-designed speaker. Perhaps it’s the unibody aluminum casing that surrounds the two small drivers and front and rear radiators. Or at 1.5 pounds, it’s more substantial than all the small-plastic Bluetooth speakers on the market right now. Anyway, this is a nice looking, very compact wireless speaker.
Bose Soundlink Flex Wireless Bluetooth Speaker
The new speaker lets you pair two devices at the same time — you can go back and forth between devices, change the audio stream — and it can store up to eight devices. Bose says the pairing process is streamlined with new voice prompts, and the speaker recognizes your devices by name using text-to-speech.
Sold individually for $25, £21 or AU$30 each, the soft covers are available in dark red, “energy green,” navy blue, charcoal black and gray. (Our photo shows the original SoundLink with a light blue color that is now disabled.)
As far as I can tell, the sound hasn’t changed. The original SoundLink Mini was able to produce impressive sound for its small size, and this model does. It plays bigger than that, with decent bass and a relatively clean, natural sound. It is a great speaker for kitchen, bedroom and small rooms (like bedroom).
I compared it to the Sony SRS-X55, which is a slightly larger speaker and costs about the same price (the Sony has an MSRP of $180). Namely, both are good speakers, with the Sony at its best when plugged in (it sounds a bit louder on AC power than when running from the unit’s internal rechargeable battery).

The Bose sounds slightly bigger and better with acoustic materials, making it slightly more pleasant than the Sony. For example, Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie-Live,” Laura Marling’s “Strange,” and Queensreach’s “Quiet Lucidity” all sound really good on Kiss.
It’s not easy with rock and hard-driving music, and when you crank up the volume and blast complex tracks — or music with a lot of bass — the speaker compensates by limiting the volume a bit and clipping some frequencies. Does not distort. In other words, it has its limitations (it works best at volume levels below 75 percent).
On a positive note, Bose did a better job with Bleachers’ “Wild Heart” than the Bluetooth speakers we tested. It’s a tough track to perform and can sound like a mess on lesser Bluetooth speakers and headphones. But Bose managed to hold it to a large extent.
As with all these small Bluetooth speakers, you don’t really get any stereo separation (probably if you’re sitting two or three feet away from it). With some Bluetooth speakers — such as the UE Boom and Megaboom — you can wirelessly pair two speakers together to boost the sound or create a stereo pair. You can’t do that with this Bose — it’s only designed to function as a standalone speaker.
I Tried Using Bose’s Bluetooth Compatible Small Speaker
Bose makes two other Bluetooth speakers — the larger and more expensive SoundLink III ($300 USD, £260 in the UK, AU$400 in Australia) and the slightly lighter but more affordable SoundLink Color ($129 USD, £260 in the UK). 120, and AU$179). The SoundLink Mini II is in the Goldilocks spot in the middle — at the right price, with the right feature set.
If you need a speaker for the pool, the similarly priced (and waterproof) UE Boom is a better bet. And the Sony SRSX55 gives Bose a run for its money for sound quality in its price category. But ultimately, it’s hard to go wrong with the Bose SoundLink Mini II. It’s one of the best compact wireless speakers overall with a great design, solid sound, decent feature set and solid battery life.

This also happens with good sound. For what, anyway. However, there’s only so much sound – or should I say quality sound – that you can get out of a decent speaker. But overall there are lots of incentives including bundled charging
