For a long time, filling a room with sound meant one thing: you paid a lot of money and spent a lot of time to install a stereo system. Then Bose came and changed a part of the bill. Yes, you still pay a lot of money, especially for an early Bose system, but suddenly you can get room-filling sound without the large footprint that most stereo systems require.
Years later, when Bluetooth speakers first hit the market, they weren’t very good. They were useful, yes, but the sound quality was not the best. Again, Bose has done a great job of packing great sound into a small package, and the Bose SoundLink 3 is the next evolution of the Bluetooth speaker line. The question, however, remains: Is the SoundLink 3 a big enough upgrade to warrant replacing your existing speakers? Let’s find out.
The Bose SoundLink 3 is designed very simply, and there really isn’t much there. Opening the box, you will find the speaker itself and the wall charger. Apart from a quick start guide and a few documents, that’s it.

Unlike the SoundLink 2, which looks like a 1970s transistor radio, the SoundLink 3 looks modern. It has lost a certain amount of personality in the process though, as it now looks a bit like other Bluetooth speakers on the market. The wraparound metal frame adds a bit of shine, but it looks more like plastic-metal, especially from a distance.
There is a lot of weight to the SoundLink 3, which is not surprising when you consider the material above. This has various pros and cons. Very light weight, it definitely makes the speaker feel very comfortable, and it is definitely not likely to fall off the desk, table or any other surface it is on. On the downside, if you plan to carry the SoundLink 3 with you often, this extra weight in your bag can become a problem after a while.
In a step up from the SoundLink 2, the SoundLink 3 does not have a built-in grill cover, although there are covers available in a variety of colors. This is sold separately, and will cost you about $ 35. If you plan to move the SoundLink 3 a lot, you may want to consider a cover to protect your investment.

Although Bluetooth is supposed to make life easier, surprisingly it often seems like it doesn’t want to work at all. This is not the case with the Bose SoundLink 3. As soon as you press the power button, the speaker will start broadcasting its presence to any device you want to connect to. In my experience, this is always a quick and painless process. There was one instance where my Moto X took about 20 seconds to pair successfully, and that was the longest wait I’ve had during testing.
In the range test, I just turned on the speaker and walked about 35 feet into a hallway (this is the maximum distance I can reach in my house). At this distance, the sound always plays clearly without skipping, and I was able to change the sound without any problems. Putting the two walls in the way did nothing to change this – it still works without a problem.
If you don’t want or can’t use Bluetooth, there’s a 3.5mm auxiliary jack on the back of the speaker. Just connect the device you want, press the AUX button on top of the speaker, and you can play music directly over the cable – no Bluetooth required.

Bose claims up to 14 hours of battery life for the SoundLink 3, which is twice as long as its predecessor. In my testing, they seem to be close to there. I let the speaker play all day, turned it off after about 12 hours, and it didn’t stop. The charging time is only 3 hours, and since it will allow more than four times the number of music playback, it is not a bad job.
The only minor negative here is that a wall charger is required. There is no option to charge via USB. There is a USB port on the bottom of the device, but this is for servicing and firmware updates, not charging.
In testing the sound quality of the Bose SoundLink 3, I played music in two different modes. First, I used the headphone output of the Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 in the auxiliary jack, then I used the Bluetooth playback that most people use with this speaker. There is no noticeable difference between the two. For music, I play a variety of genres: rock, punk, hip hop, indie rock, jazz, soft rock, metal and electronic are all in the playlist.
Bose Soundlink Revolve Wireless Portable Bluetooth Speaker (series Ii), Silver
The SoundLink 3 emphasizes bass, more so than other Bluetooth speakers I’ve heard from Bose. Even songs that aren’t particularly heavy get airplay. Given the size of the SoundLink 3, the bass doesn’t shake the walls, but it’s still surprising how much bass comes out of such a small speaker. There’s a port on the back (like most Bose speakers I’ve seen) and placing the SoundLink 3 close to a wall will use that port to boost bass.
The emphasis on the low end makes the lower midrange (about 500-600 Hz) a bit boomy. Once you get out of that range, the middle is even better. Of course, they are not optimized at all, and the “boxy” medium-weight sound of most Bluetooth speakers is not here.
The bigger things are nice and clear, but there is no priority on the bigger one. While the SoundLink 3 doesn’t make any noise at all, the lack of high priority prevents it from sounding harsh. Some speakers start to sound “crunchy” at the high end as you push the volume, but that doesn’t happen with this speaker.

Expecting good stereo separation from a speaker this size isn’t what most people would do, since it’s good.
