Bluetooth Speakers That Sync Together – Anker is a popular brand that is sold exclusively on Amazon. They are especially popular for power banks, chargers and cables. But they also sell some great portable Bluetooth speakers.
, a compact Bluetooth speaker, a claimed 24 hours of battery life and an IPX5 rating for protection from the elements. It’s £40 or $40 but it can be even cheaper on Amazon’s regular sale – I bought it for just £25.

The speaker is well packaged for a budget speaker. All you get in the box is an Anker-branded USB charging cable and a clearly written, multilingual, owner’s manual. A wall mount is not included, but I wouldn’t expect one at this price.

The build quality belies the speaker’s budget price. Aside from the speaker grill, the SoundCore 2 has a plastic finish, which feels grippy but pulls on the fingers. No matter how hard you try to squeeze and twist, there is no sound. I haven’t thrown it yet, but I don’t really care if I do. It weighs 410 grams, its compact size and long battery life make it an ideal candidate for your trip. It looks well sealed and I’m pretty confident with the IPX5 water resistance rating. It should not be submerged in water, but it should be protected from rain or weather.
The anchor logo is emblazoned on the speaker grill and back but I don’t feel like it detracts much from the simple and attractive design.
The speaker charges via its micro-USB port, which is indicated by pulling the rubber seal from the side with some force. There is also an AUX-IN port for connecting your device with a 3.5mm audio cable, which is not included. I will review this soon.
The integrated 5200mAh (5.2Ah) battery has a very respectable 2A rating, but you’ll need to use a charger that can output this time at the fastest charging speed. Using a 2A battery will take the speaker from empty to full in about 3 hours.

The advantage of using the ubiquitous micro USB port is that you can use almost any device, including a portable USB port or computer. But charging can take a long time.
It’s a shame that you can’t use the speaker itself as a power bank, especially Anker’s legacy, as there’s no USB port to charge other devices. You have to go up through the anchor
Power LEDs indicate charge status, varying from flashing red, solid red to solid white to indicate low battery, charging, and full charge.
You can drive the speaker while it is charging, but it is not recommended to leave it charging all the time. Anker suggests fully charging the speaker for at least 45 days to maintain battery life.

One press of the power button turns the speaker on, a long press turns it off. Both are accompanied by unnecessary noise, as the constant white LED also lights up during power-up.
When you first turn on the speaker, the blue Bluetooth LED will light up to indicate that the speaker is in pairing mode.
One press of the Bluetooth button will disconnect the already paired device and return the speaker to its paired mode. Then you can communicate with other speakers in the same way. There is no support for NFC, where you can make a Bluetooth connection just by touching a compatible phone or tablet.
You can only connect one device at a time, and you can’t configure two speakers as a stereo pair. But it can remember at least six devices – the mix of Apple and Android devices I tested it on.

If you have problems with pairing, you can press and hold the Bluetooth button for more than 5 seconds to reset the speaker and delete all pairing records. Note that if you do this and need to reconnect to an old Apple device, you must select “Forget this device” and then reboot, otherwise you will get “Connection Failed”. The Android devices I tested this on did not have this problem.
The paired device you get sometimes doesn’t have a battery level indicator near the Bluetooth icon, but as long as the battery level isn’t red, you’ve got hours of charge left anyway.
You can connect any device with a headphone or external port, via the AUX-IN next to the micro-USB port, behind the plastic flap on the side of the speaker.
It’s not included but only costs a few pounds. This is useful if the device does not have a Bluetooth connection, but it saves some battery life, although I can not see a clear difference, but the sound quality should be slightly improved.

When you connect your iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth, the volume controls and play button sync. So the maximum volume of the iOS device will also be the maximum volume of the speakers. The talk button will pause or play the music or video. On the Android devices I tested with the speaker, the speaker volume controls are independent, so you have to adjust the volume of the speaker and the tablet or phone. But the play button starts and stops your music and videos.
The speaker stops the music loudly when you reach full volume, which may annoy some.
When connected to Bluetooth, pressing the play button twice will skip ahead a track. Pressing and holding the play button for more than a second activates voice control via Siri or Google Assistant using the built-in microphone.
The speakerphone also allows you to control phone calls if you want. The play button answers or ends the call.

One of the biggest selling points of the speaker is the battery life: a whopping 24 hours of 60% playback volume is quoted. Although this is difficult to test, it will vary depending on your preferred playback volume, the battery life is impressive. On a two-week vacation, with moderate use, I didn’t charge the SoundCore 2 once. This is a welcome feature in such a simple and portable speaker.
The speaker supports the latest Bluetooth 4.2 standard, which Anker says extends up to 66 feet. I can’t find any confirmation that the standard 4.2 actually expands the range of Bluetooth, like the upcoming Bluetooth 5.0, but the size was good. I was able to happily play music in the next room from my regular 50s iPhone X. I tested it on the JBL Charge 2+ and got the same range.
The speaker has two 40mm full 6W drivers and a passive radiator for low frequencies. Music playback sounds better than you’d expect from a speaker of this size and price. There is a surprising amount of bass, a little distorted until you approach the maximum volume, but the speaker will fill a small room with excellent sound at 60-70% volume. The rubber feet and solid construction prevent the speaker from playing long tracks with lots of bass.
For podcasts and audio spoken on YouTube, it’s still good, but I find it a little sticky.

. Unsurprisingly, the Charge sounds great at full volume. But Anker still does a pretty good job, and it’s a significant step up from my iPhone X speaker or Amazon Echo Dot. You can listen to the audio quality comparison in my video at the top of the article. We recommend that you use some good headphones for the best experience.

If you have another Echo device and connect the cable to the Echo Dot via the AUX-IN port, you can set up a budget multi-room system using the Alexa Multi-Room feature. In the Alexa app, go to Settings | Go multi-room music and organize your group. Now you can choose to play back correctly in multiple rooms.
Even at retail price, the Anker SoundCore 2 is an attractive proposition. It’s well built, very compact, has great battery life and great sound. It’s one of the best Bluetooth speakers I’ve tested. If you keep an eye on Amazon, you can find it even cheaper, which makes it attractive.

It’s hard to criticize, but if I had to choose, I would have liked to see a USB charging port and I noticed that the volume was a little too quiet to hear the speech. You might not notice this until you’re comparing it to other speakers, and it’s a big step up
