It is slightly larger than the original and Beats reps have told me that the driver design is new and “the tweeter and woofer separation uses the same acoustic mechanics found in professional recording studios around the world”.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t get hold of a JBL Charge 2+, UE Boom 2, or Bose SoundLink Mini II to make a sound comparison, but the Beats reps hinted that the product engineers are very familiar with the competition and have designed loudspeaker for superior performance. .
However, with all Bluetooth speakers of this size there is only so much performance you can get from them. Although Pill + is designed to minimize distortion at higher tones, you will still get some distortion with some tunes, especially complicated tunes with many instruments playing at the same time.

As with previous tablet models, the Beats logo on the speaker doubles as a pause / play button and you also get volume controls and speaker options. And like the original tablet, this model has a USB output for charging your portable devices, as well as an audio input for connecting non-Bluetooth devices.
At the demo, Beats also showed me their upcoming Beats Pill + app for iOS and Android devices. Using the new app, two users can simultaneously connect their smartphone to the speaker and take turns playing music (Beats calls this DJ mode, a feature available on many other Bluetooth speakers).
You can also wirelessly pair two Pill + speakers to boost sound or create a stereo pair for dedicated left and right playback. (With the old pill, you paired two speakers by “bumping” them using NFC touch-to-pair technology. But with this new model, you pair exclusively via the app.) The app has a fuel gauge that shows the battery life of each connected speaker.
The big question is whether Beats Pill + is worth its $ 230 price tag. That’s a lot to pay for a portable speaker, although high-end “mini” Bluetooth speakers like the UE Boom 2 and Bose SoundLink Mini sell for around $ 200.

It also struggles to reproduce bass, which is disappointing for fans of heavy bass genres like EDM. Unfortunately, there is no equalizer that allows you to adjust its audio profile. Fortunately, this speaker can play stereo content without switching to mono, so you’ll feel immersed in your music.
Beats Pill + is equally for watching videos and movies. It has an over-emphasized high range, so dialogue can sound shrill or shrill. Plus, there’s no low-end bass, so you don’t hear the thud and deep rumble in action-packed movie scenes. Fortunately, its Bluetooth latency is low on iOS and Android devices, making it suitable for watching videos. However, some apps compensate for latency differently, so the user experience can vary.
The Beats Pill + is decent for podcast playback. You can pair up to two devices at a time, which is useful if you want to frequently change your audio source between your phone and laptop. It’s also quite portable, with a battery life of just under eight hours. Beats Pill + is reasonable for external use. Its sound profile is quite boomy, able to satisfy fans of heavy bass music like EDM or hip-hop. While its battery lasts just under eight hours, it’s still long enough to be used outdoors for most of the day. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get very loud and doesn’t have an advertised water or dust resistance rating, which we’re not currently testing.
