If you’re lucky, the $30 you spend on a Bluetooth tracker will pay off. These tags are only useful when you need to find your stuff – unless you’ve lost your stuff, they’re just decorative. But if you’re always scrambling to find your keys or bag on your way out the door, a Bluetooth tracker is a lifesaver. iPhone users should opt for Apple’s AirTag, which uses a large network of Apple devices to make it easier to find lost goods and find the right items, making it easier to find what you’ve lost. If you’re using an Android phone, go with tile trackers including Tile Mate (2022). With the second largest crowdfunding network, Tile is a great option for those who don’t use Apple phones.

Tile 2021 Bluetooth Trackers Review: Good Trackers, If You Use Android

AirTags leverage Apple’s extensive network of devices to find lost goods and are incredibly accurate at pinpointing an item’s exact location.

Bluetooth trackers allow you to monitor the location of anything attached to your phone, tablet or computer. For iPhone owners, Apple’s AirTag is an easy choice. While the tracker is out of range of your phone, it’s designed to work with other Apple devices, meaning there are nearly a billion devices always looking for lost items. This large mesh makes it easy to find what you throw away. When your AirTag is within range of your phone, it also uses technology that goes beyond standard Bluetooth to show your lost item within inches. No other tracker can compete with the wide range and accuracy of detection that AirTag offers.

Tail Mate has a longer range, is louder and has a better chance of finding your lost items than other non-Apple trackers.

Tile Essentials bundles two sets of Tile Mates, Tile Slim and Tile Adhesive in a more affordable bundle than buying them separately.

AirTags don’t work with Android phones, but tile trackers including Tile Mate (2022), Tile Slim (2022), and Tile Sticker (2022) (also included in the bundle) are a good option. As a company, Tile is similar to trackers in the same way that Kleenex is to facial tissues. Its followers provide the second largest crowd-sourcing network with an impressive range. You can use Tile to make a lost phone ring remotely, something you can’t do with Airtags.

Over the past few years, we’ve tested more than a dozen Bluetooth fans. The major players in this category are well known. But to make sure we don’t miss one, during our research for a previous version of this guide, we turned to Amazon and Google. A subsequent search yielded good comparative reviews from Tom’s Guide, The Wall Street Journal (subscription required), Wired, and Yahoo!

Before introducing Apple’s AirTag 2021, one of the most important tests we did was to check the tracker’s possible range – how far we could move a connected smartphone from the tracker before we lost the Bluetooth connection. In 2019, we tested the range at Wirecutter’s 190-foot-long office in Long Island City, New York. We placed each tracker on a shelf, shook it to ring, then walked with our paired iPhones while measuring distance using a measuring wheel. Once the tracker’s smartphone app shows the tracker is out of range — or we’ve physically hit a wall — we record the distance. We repeat this test at least five times with each tracker and calculate the average distance for each measurement. Since airtags span a larger network and are more accurate when in range, we still test the effective distance, but it’s not as important.

If you use an iPhone and want to track your belongings, Apple’s AirTag is a great option. Compared to the competition, this tracker has two distinct capabilities that make it our top pick: AirTag uses a large network of Apple devices to help track where you left your lost item, and accurate tracking makes it easy for you to find it. Direct location. Taken together, these two features mean you can get more of what you’re looking for with AirTag than with any other Bluetooth tracking system.

Each AirTag runs on a removable, user-replaceable battery. It’s the only product designed for Apple to make the process easier.

Apple isn’t the first company to use a crowdsourcing network for tracking purposes, but with over a billion devices, its network has a large number of devices that can track your content. As of 2019, Apple’s Find My app uses Bluetooth on every iPhone, iPad, and Mac on the network to anonymously locate lost iPhones, Macs, and contacts who share their location. Now AirTags can use the same system to define the location of anything you attach. In practical terms, this means that if you deploy your AirTag keys in a coffee shop, for example, as long as the person there has an Apple device, the location of the keys will be reported to you (and the person’s iPhone or other Apple device that identified it will never know). Although tile trackers work in a similar way, they work on a much smaller scale – a customer sitting one table away is more likely to have an iPhone than a tile.

Another important feature of AirTag is that it only works if it knows the general location of your tracker. Like the iPhone 11 and 12 series, AirTags support ultra-wideband wireless connectivity, which allows precise location over short distances. Once you’re in a familiar location for your Airtag (for example, the coffee shop where you left your keys), you can tap the Find button in the Find My app. The app then shows you the route and distance to the Airtag in question, and as you approach your phone vibrates and lets you play a sound to aid in your search. It took a while for the AirTag’s tracking signal to turn off in our testing, but once it did we were thoroughly impressed with the system’s accuracy.

The device is noticeably lacking in any form of attachment, such as a keyhole or adhesive backing. Instead, you need to purchase an additional accessory.

Compared to tail drivers, Airtags have a shorter Bluetooth range. Apple won’t reveal any specific numbers, but we found the tracker only maintained a connection up to 30 feet in our iPhone test. On the surface, that’s not great, but wandering around your office or home to find your keys isn’t the same as using a 100-foot range tile. And for the most part, Apple’s large crowd-sourced network and location accuracy are the most important things, we think, because it makes it easier for you to find things you’ve really missed.

With a shiny, white plastic front and metal back, the AirTag looks and feels like a pin-back button you’d put on a jean jacket or backpack. The diameter is less than a quarter, and the tracker is actually a millimeter or two thicker than most iPhones, though its curved design feels thinner. When you order from Apple you can choose to include a custom image, four characters (letters and/or numbers) or an emoji of your choice; If you buy four packs, you can get a different text for each one. The device is noticeably lacking in any form of attachment, such as a keyhole or adhesive backing. Instead, you need to purchase an additional accessory. Of course, Apple sells a handful of them, and many third-party companies sell all kinds of designs.

If you lose your AirTag (or anything it contains or is attached to), you can use the Find My app or ask Siri to trigger an audible alert on the AirTag. The song plays for about six seconds with a series of repeated beeps. Compared to what we experienced with tail trackers, we found both tone and volume to help us locate an AirTag when it was hidden near our test area. If your AirTag is buried under a pile of clothes, for example, you can’t hear it, but you should hear the tone if you’re in the same room.

Airtags Vs. Tile And Smarttag: Apple’s Bluetooth Tracker Isn’t Necessarily The Best

Thanks to Apple’s control over both the hardware (iPhone or iPad and AirTag) and software, the setup process to unlock a new AirTag is foolproof. When you remove the new AirTag and place it next to your phone or tablet, a pop-up will appear on your screen as if you were pairing AirPods or an Apple Watch. Once you click
