Xiaomi recently added two new products to its audio lineup in India. Their names pretty much describe what they are and leave little to the imagination. The Mi Neckband Pro Bluetooth Headphone is the successor to the Redmi Sonic Base along with its non-pro variant (until they launch a similar product under the Redmi umbrella). Its claim to fame is getting active noise cancellation (ANC) in the sub-2,000 price range. Another product, the M Portable Bluetooth Speaker (16W), is … you know what it is. Time to take a close look at them and see how they work, and more importantly, if they’re worth buying.
The Redmi Sonic Base was the last neckband from the company that I tried and I wasn’t very impressed with the input. I expected the new Mi Neckband Pro to sound significantly different, but alas! Yes, it has a new feature not seen in this price range and improved battery backup, but the sound produced by its 10mm drivers is more or less the same as its cheaper cousin. There is also plenty of bass that extends to other frequencies. The bass is not tight and the sound is not too loud. The mids lack detail and the highs lack edge, making the overall sound production too bland for my taste.

Unlike the SonicBass, the Mi Neckband Pro supports SBC and AAC codecs over Bluetooth 5.0. There is no support for aptX, nor did I expect it in this budget, so no problem there. This neckband offers a feature not expected in this budget – ANC. But hold your horses, the ANC you get here is barely functional. It cuts out some of the low frequencies and buzz, but lets most other background sounds through. So it’s important to keep your expectations in check and not expect miracles from a sub-2,000 wireless neckband.
Jb Wb29 Wireless Bluetooth Neckband
On the bright side, build quality seems to be slightly improved and looks too, with a rubberized neckband and glossy plastic battery and controls combined. The built-in control unit has three buttons, one of which acts as a power button that lets you play/pause audio or answer/end/reject calls. The volume key allows you to skip to the next or previous track when you press any volume key for a few seconds. On the other side of the unit is a fourth button that acts as a switch for ANC. All buttons have just the right tactile feel.
The ear cups are comfortable and the silicone ear tips offer adequate noise isolation. There are three pairs of different sizes in the bundle. IPX5 rated sweat and splash resistant, these headphones can be taken to the gym or on a jog and stay in place when you sweat. The company claims that the built-in 150 mAh battery will last for 20 hours on a full charge at 50% volume with ANC turned off. In real life use I got close to 15 hours with ANC at 60-65% volume in half the time. Without ANC, the Mi Neckband Pro can last for over 17 hours, which is pretty good. It takes about 90 minutes to fully charge using a standard micro-USB charger. I would have preferred to see a USB-C port here, as it is now 2021.
Call quality is another disappointment in this neck. The person on the other end has a thick booming voice and you clearly cannot hear the other person. The microphone doesn’t pick up much ambient noise when it’s not outside, but your voice is far from crisp. Almost everyone I talked to with this neckband told me to switch to the phone
