While the TDK Life on Record A33 Wireless Weatherproof Speaker has some minor flaws, it offers very good sound for its size and price (around $150) and is well-suited for both indoor and outdoor use with a sturdy, splash-proof design.

With so many portable Bluetooth speakers on the market, sometimes we delay reviewing some products that we should have reviewed earlier.
The TDK Life on Record A33 Wireless Weatherproof Speaker delivers great sound for its size, has a robust, water-resistant design, speakerphone capabilities and a USB charging port to charge your smartphone or tablet. It’s also a decent price at around $150 online.

Battery life (6 hours) isn’t great, you have to recharge the speaker with an AC adapter instead of a regular micro USB cable, and there’s no pause/play button on the speaker itself.
While the TDK Life on Record A33 Wireless Weatherproof Speaker has some minor shortcomings, it delivers very good sound for its size and price and is well-suited for indoor and outdoor use with a sturdy, splash-proof design.
Such is the case with TDK Life on Record’s A33 Wireless Weatherproof Speaker, which has been on the market for some time and has received mostly favorable reviews from consumers. It’s very easy to see why. The A33 is solidly built, offers strong sound for its size, and best of all, can be purchased online for just under $150 – or nearly $100 off the list price of $249.99.

It’s not without some minor flaws, but all in all, it’s one of the better values in the portable Bluetooth speaker field.
The first thing you notice about the A33 when you take it out of the box is that it has some power. It weighs 2.8 pounds and measures 3.7 inches high by 2 inches wide and 9.5 inches deep, making it a mid-sized wireless speaker rather than a true mini Bluetooth speaker. If you’re looking for something super portable, this isn’t it, but the extra size – at least in this case – means better sound.
The A33 is quite compact, but has some power and weighs 2.8 pounds. Sarah Tew
Tdk Life On Record Launches New Trek Max Wireless Speaker
Although it has a very simple, boxy design, I liked the look of the speaker. It has clean lines and the buttons on the top of the unit are well recessed and clearly marked with LED lighting.
There are volume controls on the unit, but no pause/play buttons or transport controls (skip track forward/backward), so you’ll have to control playback via your smartphone, tablet or other Bluetooth-enabled device. Some people don’t like the lack of transport controls, but others like to at least have a pause/play button.
The A33 has two 1.5-inch drivers and a front 2.5-inch subwoofer and two rear 3-inch passive radiators. It is splash-proof (not waterproof) and its ports are covered by removable rubber doors that keep moisture and dust out.
Battery Mod A Portable Bluetooth Speaker
Behind that rubber cover you’ll find an audio input for non-Bluetooth devices, a USB charging port (to charge your smartphone from the speaker’s internal battery), an on/off switch and a 12V DC charging port. Alas, like many of these powerful compact speakers, you must charge the unit with a separate AC adapter, not with a standard USB cable. This is great, except that a normal AC adapter can be easy to misplace and if you lose it, you won’t be able to charge the speaker.
There are built-in speakerphone capabilities (the speakerphone worked well) and the bottom of the unit has rubber feet to prevent it from moving around when the vibrations kick up when you play loud music. At the bottom, you’ll also find a small kickstand that allows you to fire the speaker at a slight angle and up. The speaker does not ship with a carrying case or case.
A rubber door keeps moisture and dirt away from the speaker ports. The speaker is splash resistant, but not waterproof. Sarah Tew
Tdk A25 Trek Plus Bluetooth Wireless Weather Resistant Speaker Xsdp A25
All these small Bluetooth speakers have their limitations when it comes to sound quality and the A33 is no different. But it fared better than most speakers in our tests.
It had some punch in its bass, offered decent clarity, played loud for its size, and sounded very natural, which is one of the most important qualities you can ask for in a Bluetooth speaker.
It could handle most of today’s simple pop and techno music without distortion and had a pleasant enough ambience with a relatively well-balanced sound. However, it fell a bit flat with certain tunes. For example, with Nirvana’s “All Sorry” there was some background hum and it became clear that the speaker just didn’t have the dynamic range to handle the more subtle/complex tracks well. That’s par for the course for this type of speaker, but as I said, the A33 performed better than most speakers in this price range and above in our tests.
Holiday Gift Guide: 12 Wireless Speakers We Want This Year
I put it up against the new Jabra Solemate Max, which is a larger speaker that lists for $399.99. The Solemate Max could play louder and certain tracks had more depth, but the A33 had a more compelling sound signature overall. It just sounded more natural.
If you’re wondering how it compares to the Bose SoundLink Mini, the Bose is smaller and has a slightly smoother sound with slightly deeper bass. But sound quality is subjective, and for some the A33 will be up there with speakers like Bose and the UE Boom ($199.99), another weatherproof speaker I really like.
The advantage of the UE Boom is that you can connect two of them together, and it offers better battery life — 15 hours compared to the A33’s 6 hours (the battery does.
