At first glance, the Sony XB72 EXTRA BASS looks like a very large portable speaker. It is a high-powered music system loaded with light and sound effects. The sound that the $ 349.99 system produces will embarrass most portable speakers, but it’s plugged into a power outlet.
The Sony XB72 is a huge system and does not pretend to be portable. It is over 2 feet tall (or wide depending on where it is located) and weighs nearly 27 pounds. It has a handle for snap it, but no battery – you will need to find an electrical outlet and one that is close enough because the included cable is 4 feet long. On the plus side, the power supply is built in so you don’t have a single power brick to carry around.

There are pads on the bottom and sides so it can be placed in a vertical or landscape format. In any case, it is very stable.
The case is a black textured plastic with the Sony logo clearly displayed. The front is a black wire mesh covering a pair of large woofers and three tweeters. Another is the “Live Voice” button. It uses speaker angles and DSP to simulate 3D sound. It works best when the speakers are mounted horizontally, leaving some space between the drivers. And it really works. It can not replace a pair of separately connected speakers, but it works well to provide The Sony XB72 goes deeper than a single unit can produce.
The whole effect of this speaker is “energetic” rather than transformative. The bass can be loud and the sound is clear, but the midrange is a bit lacking. It’s not bad for the target audience – very few people listen in detail in the “club”, but it does mean that the XB72 is more suitable as a party speaker rather than a stereo replacement for those who care about listening to music. .

And this is where things can turn wild. The effects of light can be amazing. All LEDs and strobe effects can be customized or you can use presets. Personally, the first thing I did was turn off the strobes, but the LEDs were pretty cool. There is EQ if you want to adjust the volume beyond (or add to) EXTRA BASS and LIVE SOUND features.
Then there is the DJ Effect function. It allows you to play with sound effects on music, including Flanger, Isolator and Wah settings. With Fiestable you can even control these effects by moving, shaking or shaking your smartphone. You can also use apps to add smartphone-driven effects, such as scratching drums, traps, and wood block sounds. Be careful which smartphone is controlling these effects because someone entering the city on the Flanger and hitting the drum in the middle of the song can get old very quickly.

This is not a sound system intended for music lovers or those looking for a portable music player.
However, those looking for a “small” portable speaker will love the strong bass, especially when the famous “EXTRA BASS” function is activated. In addition, the Sony XB72 EXTRA BASS will tick all the boxes for those who want to create a club experience at home. You get powerful sound, programmable lighting (complete with colorful LEDs, as well as traffic lights) and the ability to DJ with a wide range of sound effects.
On the other hand, not my cup of tea (although it’s really a cool factor), but an instant hit with my teen…
