The remote microphone array uses advanced beamforming, and multi-channel echo cancellation allows for quick activation of the voice assistant and Trueplay™ automatic tuning.

Charging Charge with the included USB-C cable and a 5V/1A or 2.1A USB power adapter, a Qi-certified wireless charger, or a specially designed Sonos wireless charger (sold separately).

The Roam is smaller in size and weight for increased portability, while the Move’s larger size allows for a deeper, richer sound. The Roam is also water resistant and can be submerged up to 1 meter (3.2 feet) for 30 minutes, while the Move is designed to withstand moderate rain and splashes.

Bluetooth pairs or connects devices using short-range radio waves. WiFi also pairs or connects devices, but also connects to the Internet, usually through a wireless router. Internet access lets you stream higher-quality audio over longer distances, group or stereo speakers to Sonos speakers, play content from Sonos Radio, use features like Sound Swap, and more.

Sonos Roam & Wireless Charger Set

Like all Sonos speakers, Roam must be set up with the Sonos app when using WiFi before you can connect devices directly via Bluetooth.

Roam offers up to 10 hours of continuous playback on a single charge. When not in use, Roam goes into sleep mode to save power, and the battery can last up to 10 days.

Yes. When you’re on WiFi, you can use the Sonos app to create stereo pairs with two compatible speakers and enjoy stereo separation and a wider soundstage for listening to music and other audio. A Roam stereo pair will not function as surround speakers in a Sonos home theater system.

Sonos launched its new ultra-portable speaker last month in conjunction with the opening of pre-orders. Before Roam hits first customers later this month, we can test this slick new speaker to see how it compares to other options in the ultraportable category along with the larger Sonos Move portable speaker.

Sonos Roam comes with an impressive list of features to match the competition and beyond with extras like AirPlay 2, Qi wireless charging, auto EQ with Trueplay, automatic switching between Bluetooth/WiFi and more.

The Sonos Roam uses a triangular prism shape that makes it easy to grip, lie down or stand up. It uses durable rubber on the bottom and top for drop protection, and the lid is also concave so that buttons are not accidentally pressed. And the Roam base offers handy Qi wireless charging.

Four small rubber points on one side of the saw offer a stable, non-slip base when you want to Roam horizontally. On the back, you have the sleep/power button and a USB-C port for wired charging.

The rest of this highly portable speaker is made of plastic with a matte finish. No surprise here but the Sonos Roam has solid build quality and precision.

The installation process is smooth and easy but there are few steps to get everything up and running. First, you need to use the Sonos app to set up Roam over WiFi (required before you can use it as a Bluetooth speaker). It automatically appears as an AirPlay 2 speaker after that, but you’ll need to add it to the Home app to enable Siri functionality.

After setting up Roam with the Sonos app, you can also pair your phone with it via Bluetooth. With the speakers on, hold down the power button again for a few seconds until you see the blue light just above the Sonos logo.

And to turn on Siri support, open the Home app. After tapping + in the Home app > Add accessory, you can tap “I don’t have a code or can’t scan”. You will then see your Sonos Roam and be able to complete the setup.

You can choose the room where you will use Roam the most, but you can also create a new room called Sonos Roam if you want more flexibility.

Now you have the option to start music from your iPhone, with Siri, the Sonos app, or with the dedicated Roam button.

Measuring 6.61 x 2.44 x 2.36 inches (168 x 62 x 60mm), the Sonos Roam is extremely portable and slightly more compact than similar speakers like the Ultimate Ears Boom or JBL Flip 4.

Sonos Roam Review: A Perfectly Portable Powerhouse

Below is a view of the Roam alongside the HomePod mini and Flip 4 and then a display of the Roam alongside its bigger sibling, the Sonos Move.

Roam’s size (only a few inches taller than a soda can) makes it convenient to carry around. It can fit into almost any bag, purse, briefcase, etc., and won’t cost you less than 1 pound.

In my testing, I found the Sonos Roam to produce very good sound quality considering the size of the speakers. Of course, given how small this ultraportable is, it won’t have the powerful and rich low end of – more than twice as big – the Sonos Move or other large speakers. But the audio that Sonos can deliver with the Roam is impressive.

I tested it on a variety of music genres and it offers crisp, clear mids and highs. And that’s not to say the bass is completely lacking here, it’s just that it plays back so it doesn’t hit the same way the Sonos Move, Five, or something like the HomePod, all of which have much larger speakers/woofers.

Review: Sonos Roam Portable Speaker Can Really Boom

Another aspect that impressed me is that even when at 60-80% volume, the Roam doesn’t sound distorted. Listening in the 90-100% range isn’t very pleasant as the mids and highs feel abrasive, but that’s not surprising and I can’t imagine I need or want to use Roam at max volume.

I did some test listening with a similarly sized JBL Flip 4 and found that the Roam outperformed it with a cleaner sound. Even my jumping wife said the same thing (without mentioning which speaker was playing).

For another reference – though not in the same portable category – I found the HomePod mini to be in the same ballpark as the Sonos Roam in terms of volume output and sound quality. But of course, you don’t get portability and flexibility with the HomePod mini. And when you stop to think about all that Sonos has managed to pack into this compact product like IP67 sealing, battery, wireless charging, etc., it’s an impressive feat.

Aside from the fact that the Sonos Roam is the most portable speaker I’ve ever used, it has a variety of features that set it further apart from its competitors.

Sonos Roam Review: A Good Speaker In A Small Package

One of my favorites is the ability to connect it to any Qi wireless charger. Very handy for not messing with other cables and using the wireless charger I already have.

Like the HomePod and HomePod mini that have automatic EQ, the Sonos Roam uses the company’s Trueplay Tuning to automatically adjust EQ to its environment. Roam uses his microphone to do this from time to time. But you can also manually adjust the bass, treble, and “loudness” features in the Sonos app (Settings > Product > Roam > EQ).

Two other very thoughtful features, in the Sonos app you can turn off status lights and physical touch controls on Sonos Roam.

This is the smallest portable speaker on the market which is a big plus for Apple users and for those who like to use multiple platforms, you have Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa functions built in.

Review: Sonos Roam

While $169 might sound a bit pricey for an ultra-portable speaker, the Sonos Roam delivers impressive sound, versatility, premium features, and a solid design/build.

What stands out to me is that the Roam is a great portable speaker, whether it’s your first Sonos product or the latest expansion of an existing setup – whether you like Siri and AirPlay or also like using other voice assistants.

I think the combination of audio and hardware quality along with thoughtful features like AirPlay, wireless charging, automatic Bluetooth/WiFi switching and more makes this an attractive option that will last a long time.

The Sonos Roam is now available for pre-order when the new speakers launch in May (late April for pre-orders).
