If you’re looking for the best overall sound a soundbar can offer, the Sonos Playbar is the answer. It filled our test room with clear, crisp sound that no other sound bar can match. The bass is particularly strong considering it doesn’t have an external subwoofer. If you want really powerful bass, you might want to look for a model with an external subwoofer, but Sonos offers a more even, clear and accurate overall sound than similarly priced models that include a subwoofer. It can also be paired with other Sonos speakers if you decide to use a multi-speaker surround sound system later. Our only minor gripe is that everything has to be done over WiFi via the Sonos app, which works great, but sometimes we want a direct Bluetooth connection without the fuss.

The Sonos Playbar is an excellent sound machine that offers, in our opinion, the best sound experience you’ll get without the need for an expensive and complicated sound system.

In the next few sections, we’ll discuss how the PlayBar performed in all the individual tests we ran. We add the scores from these individual tests together to arrive at our total score.

Sound quality is where the Playbar really surprised us. In our audio test, it earned the only perfect 10 out of 10.

We were very impressed with the truly immersive, room-filling sound the Playbar produced in our tests. When listening to this device, it’s really hard to believe that so much sound can come out of such a compact package. During our testing, the speaker never clipped an ounce, even when we played the highest and highest notes. Powerful bass exceeds what we expect from a standalone soundbar. Granted, it can’t quite match the models’ roar with an external subwoofer, but the Playbar’s bass is well defined and clear, creating a fuller overall sound than the bass models. Overall, the clarity of the Playbar is outstanding, and all the notes of complex and busy musical numbers are still clear and unique. Best of all, if you want the best sound a soundbar can produce, get the Playbar.

The Playbar has a rich sound unmatched by any other model we’ve tested.

One area where the Play Bar lacks in the classroom is ease of use. It scored 6 out of 10 on metric, with scores between 4 and 9.

If you connect the Playbar to your TV, it’s very easy to set up and use, and in this case it’s just plug and play. If you want to do extra things like stream music from your phone or adjust sound settings, you have to use the Sonos app. The app talks to the playbar over your home wifi network. Once this connection is established, it’s pretty solid, but in our testing we found that it can sometimes be difficult for the Playbar and the app to connect to a WiFi network and communicate with each other.

There are some simple controls on the side of the Playbar in case you don’t want to open the Sonos app.

Additionally, any music you stream to the playbar must go through the Sonos app. This means you must be logged into your Pandora, Amazon Music and Spotify accounts in the Sonos app. This only needs to be done once, so it’s very hassle-free. However, that doesn’t mean visitors need to download the Sonos app if they want to play music from their device on the Playbar. This Wi-Fi system might be a little clunkier than a simple Bluetooth connection, but it has some advantages. First, once you start streaming music, it’s technically streaming directly to the Playbar from your WiFi, not through your phone. This means the music won’t be interrupted every time you get a notification on your phone. Plus, if you decide to buy more Sonos speakers for your home, you can easily control them all from one device.

Sonos Playbar Review

The Playbar is one of the few Sonos products that doesn’t offer AirPlay compatibility. However, if you have almost any other Sonos speaker in your home, Apple users can use AirPlay (essentially Apple’s WiFi-centric version of Bluetooth) to stream almost any audio from their device through the speaker, then pair it with the Playbar.

The Playbar was one of the best performers in our audio customization test, taking the top marks by a single point.

The Sonos app offers a basic EQ panel that adjusts bass, treble and balance. It also offers some unique preset sound modes. Night mode keeps things like conversations at a normal volume, but reduces the volume of high noise and very low bass. This allows you to watch TV at night without disturbing your neighbours. If you always have trouble understanding what people are saying, you can turn on speech enhancement. This boosts the frequencies normally associated with voice, so you can always hear what people are saying, even if you’re watching an action movie where the sound editor makes all the explosions too loud .

Aesthetically, the Playbar is our favorite model, earning top marks in our design / style metrics.

The all-metal body and mesh speaker overlays on the playback bar give it a classic and elegant look. The simple lines are just as refined and are likely to blend into any wall or place on any TV stand. One thing we’re not a big fan of are the dark gray accents on the bottom of the soundbar. We prefer the all-black look, but the accents aren’t too obvious and don’t detract too much from the overall sleek look of the soundbar.

The Sonos Playbar is one of the more expensive soundbars we’ve tested. But if you’re looking for great sound and the ability to expand to a larger sound system, it’s worth every penny. If you just want a solid upgrade from your TV’s built-in speakers, but don’t want to pay for loud sound, the Samsung HW-K450 2.1 channel offers better overall value.

The Sonos Playbar attempts to bring a great experience to home theater in the form of a sound bar – it’s a stand-alone replacement for a tweeter receiver and multi-piece speaker system that might otherwise be called so. Apart from some hassles, it delivers.

Packed with nine impressive drivers, this compact, low-profile Playbar features rounded corners and silver accents, earning more style points than most black, square and dashed soundbars. Like other Sonos devices, the Playbar requires an Ethernet feed from a router or a wireless connection provided by the $50 Sonos Bridge. Unlike other Sonos devices, it also requires an audio input — in this case, an optical connection from the TV. It would be nice if the Playbar could accommodate composite or at least coaxial connections, even if that meant losing some audio fidelity.

Sonos Beam Vs. Sonos Playbar: What Is The Best Choice For 5.1?

The Playbar doesn’t need to be there by itself, although it works well. It can be paired wirelessly with Sonos Play: 3 speakers for rear channel surround sound, and can also be paired with a Sonos Sub if you want more bass. But, heck, that pushes an already expensive setup into the stratosphere.
