The Zipp 2 is an all-in-one smart speaker that produces 360-degree, room-filling sound thanks to its driver configuration. There’s no shortage of connectivity options, and with its sleek design, the speaker has all the essentials of a premium product. However, it is not perfect because the water resistance is wrong.

The price of the Zipp 2 fluctuates. Originally reviewed at £219, the speaker is now priced at £279. Despite the price hike, I haven’t changed my mind.

It has plenty of competition: the Ultimate Ears Megablast costs £170 and is a fully waterproof smart speaker. The £200 Sonos One is a Sony hit. Of course, Amazon has its own speaker that only supports Alexa phones. The regular second generation Echo costs just £90, its bigger and more capable sibling the Echo Plus (first generation) costs £90 and the new second generation Plus costs £140. The Plus series connects to other devices in your smart home.

As the name suggests, the speaker has a removable cover. This is especially useful if you want to change the color or give the cover a clean look. Additional costs will be at an additional cost. Once removed, they reveal the Zipp 2’s drivers, which are all housed in plastic covers.

When it comes to connectivity, the Libratone doesn’t hold back, with AirPlay 2, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DNLA, USB and a 3.5mm jack. Unlike the Sonos One, which ignores Bluetooth, the Danish manufacturer has made it even easier for your friends and family to pair their devices with the smart speaker.

Zipp 2 weighs 1.2 kg, is 261 mm long and 122 mm wide. That doesn’t make it the world’s thinnest or most portable smart speaker, but its fabric handle makes it easy to carry. The speaker is also battery powered, meaning it doesn’t need to be plugged in. The battery lasts about 10 hours and charges very quickly via its own DC connector.

The main drawback is the lack of water resistance. Unlike the Ultimate Ears Megablast, it can’t be submerged. Bluetooth aptX, a higher-quality codec that improves the reliability of wireless audio, is also not supported.

The Libratone app provides a straightforward user interface that lets you control the speaker remotely. It lets you enable or disable Alexa, Spotify (via Spotify Connect), Tidal, and your favorite radio stations from around the world. Given that the speaker is built with Alexa in mind, Amazon Music is of course the default music service. It has a wide variety of songs, so you won’t struggle to find your favorite.

Inside the app you’ll find EQ settings, changing LED brightness and viewing what’s playing (including source). The same can’t be said for some of its competitors, so it’s refreshing to see Libratone’s focus on user experience, which makes a world of difference in everyday use.

Amazon Alexa also works surprisingly well. The six microphones on the far side pick up sound from a distance, but if you turn up the volume you should naturally hear it sound, which really makes sense.

Libratone’s Cute Zipp 2 And Zipp Mini 2 Speakers Come With Alexa

Like other non-Amazon speakers, the Zipp 2 doesn’t have Alexa voice calling — if you prefer that, you’ll have to opt for one of the Echo devices instead.

Libratone designed the Zipp 2 for sound around the house. To facilitate this, a plastic reflector sits between a 4-inch neodymium tweeter and a 1-inch soft-dome neodymium tweeter, delivering 360-degree sound. It’s very loud.

Its two 4-inch low-frequency radiators allow the Zipp 2 to go down to 50Hz, perfect for the smooth bass lines of Bad Bunny and Drake’s “Mia.” Its mid-bass effect is impressive. Not only does it add a solid, controlled mid-bass lunch, it also won’t drown in the Mediterranean. Other smart speakers, such as the Ultimate Ears Megablast or the Amazon Echo, struggle in this area, but not the Zipp 2. So if you’re looking to enjoy Michael Jackson’s “With You” sound, you’re in luck. Its performance in this department is comparable to the Sonos One, but not as advanced as the latter.

The cymbals sound delicious. Although the Zipp 2 extends well into the upper reaches of the frequency sweep, it’s not stingy or fatiguing. Libratone got the mix right. The speaker’s ability to separate instruments is also impressive to hear. To put it to the test, I put on Bruno Mars’ “Versace on the Floor,” and suffice it to say, I wasn’t disappointed: soft 80s piano sounds, background vocals, and cymbals don’t blend into the chaotic mess.

Overall, the Zipp 2 is a pretty smart speaker. It sounds great, has a straightforward application that’s easy to use, lots of connectivity options, Amazon Alexa responds to all your needs, and the Danish design adapts to any living environment.

It’s quite expensive, more expensive than the Sonos One, and it also has great sound quality. But the Zipp 2 also sounds great, has all the juicy connectivity options, and has the ability to be used on the road. It far surpasses the Ultimate Ears Megablast and Amazon-branded speakers with its many inputs and audio features. In my opinion, it’s the best Amazon Alexa speaker on the market right now. I love both HomePods. One is in my bedroom and one is in my office. After I finish work for the day, I can ask Siri to move my music from the studio to the living room, so I can continue to listen while I cook dinner and relax. Most of the time, HomePods are also within earshot of issuing Siri commands, turning lights on and off, adding items to my shopping list, and activating shortcuts.

But here’s the thing: summer. I spend time outside and go on family trips. Meanwhile, my HomePods are plugged into the wall. They’ll be waiting when I get back, but when I’m gone, the HomePods won’t work, which has led me to look at portable speakers that can extend beyond the walls of my house.

My research led me to Libratone’s Zipp 2 and Zipp Mini 2 wireless speakers, two of the only wireless solutions that support Apple’s AirPlay 2 audio streaming technology. Libratone sent me one of each model to test, and I’ve spent the last few months with them all over my house, yard, and beach. Both speakers delivered the versatility I was looking for, expanding the way and places I could play music. However, none of the Zipp speakers are as easy or reliable as the HomePod. The few issues I encountered were not minor issues, balanced by the versatility of the Zipp speakers, which, depending on your needs, make them a worthy replacement or complement to the HomePod.

The reason I tried Zipp speakers was to expand the way I already listen to music. I subscribe to Apple Music and have an extensive library of music that I purchased a few years ago. I can still listen to both sources, but between Apple Music’s streaming library and iCloud Music Library, I don’t know or care where the music is coming from, as long as there’s something I want to listen to.
