When you’re watching TV with friends, your TV speakers (or better yet, soundbar) are ideal for broadcasting sound to everyone. But when you’re watching TV alone, you don’t have to share that sound with your whole house. In fact, you probably don’t want to disturb your partner, roommates, kids, or neighbors if you’re the only one watching TV late at night, or if you’re using the TV as a second monitor while working from home. You can turn off your speakers and rely on subtitles if you really want to be silent, but we have a better solution: use headphones.

Headphones allow you to listen to whatever you want without disturbing anyone around you. You probably use them mostly to listen to music or podcasts, or even watch videos on your phone or computer, but they’re not limited to mobile devices or computers. Here are some ways to connect your favorite headphones to your TV to enjoy the combined benefits of private sound and a big screen.

Inch To 50 Inch Tvs

This is the most direct and obvious way to use headphones with your TV. It’s also the least convenient. If your TV has a 3.5mm headphone jack, just plug in your wired headphones. If your TV doesn’t have a 3.5mm jack but has stereo RCA outputs, get an RCA to 3.5mm adapter and use headphones that way.

The obvious problem is that you need a very long wire to listen at a comfortable distance from the TV. Even if you have that cable, you are physically tied to your TV. You should also be careful not to pull on the cable or trip over it. We don’t recommend this method unless the TV is small and close; and even then, this is probably not the best method.

If you have an Amazon Fire TV media streamer (like the Fire TV Cube or Fire TV Stick 4K) or a TV that uses Amazon’s Fire TV platform, you already have a built-in wireless option: Bluetooth. The Fire TV platform supports direct connections to Bluetooth devices such as game controllers, keyboards, and headphones. This means you can easily pair your favorite Bluetooth headphones (or a second dedicated pair, if you want to keep some TV-only headphones) to your Fire TV just like you would a smartphone.

From the home screen, go to the Settings menu and select Bluetooth devices and controllers. Select Other devices, then Add a new device. Put your Bluetooth headset into pairing mode and select it when it appears on the screen. Your Fire TV should start streaming audio to your headphones once the connection is complete.

Like Fire TV (which runs on Android), Google TV devices (and its predecessor, Android TV) can also be paired with Bluetooth devices. This means you can use your Bluetooth headset with any Hisense, Sony or TCL model powered by Google TV or Chromecast with Google TV.

The process is the same for Android TV and Google TV. On the home screen, go to the Settings menu and select Remote Control & Add-ons. Select Add an accessory and put the Bluetooth headset into pairing mode. Finally, select your headphones from the menu when it appears. That’s it.

Roku media streamers and Roku TVs like the Roku TV TCL 6 series don’t have Bluetooth, but they still let you listen to what you’re watching wirelessly. Roku’s answer is called Private Listening, a feature that streams audio to a compatible Roku remote or the Roku app on a smartphone or tablet.

If your Roku remote has a headphone jack on the side, just plug your headphones into the jack and start listening. The connected TV automatically turns off and the sound starts streaming through the headphones. Few Roku TV models ship with that remote, but the Roku Ultra, Streaming Stick+, and Streambar Pro all come with remotes equipped with headphone jacks. If your current Roku remote doesn’t have a headphone jack, you can upgrade to the $30 Roku Voice Remote Pro, which provides said jack, along with a lost remote finder and hands-free voice control.

Alternatively, you can use your preferred mobile device with the Roku app (available for Android and iOS). After connecting your phone or tablet to your Roku TV or media streaming device via the app, you can connect headphones to automatically route audio directly through your mobile device’s speakers or connected headphones. The app is a bit more demanding than the headphone jack on the remote, and some Roku TV inputs may not be able to stream through it.

Your TV may have Bluetooth even if it’s not one of the three most common platforms. LG’s webOS (opens in a new window) and Samsung’s Tizen operating system (opens in a new window) support Bluetooth headphones and headsets. Click on the links for instructions for each TV platform. You’ll most likely have Bluetooth on higher model TVs here; This connection standard may not be available on older or lower quality TVs.

If your TV or media streamer doesn’t support Bluetooth or audio streaming via an app, you’ll need to get some kind of transmitter to listen wirelessly. Bluetooth transmitters are inexpensive devices (usually between $20 and $50) that you plug into the back of your TV to wirelessly stream audio to a nearby paired Bluetooth audio device.

There are many, many Bluetooth transmitters available on Amazon, but not all of them are suitable for TVs. Cheaper transmitters only connect via 3.5mm jacks, which are present on some TVs but aren’t the best connection available. Find a transmitter with an optical audio input (TOSLink or SPDIF); optical outputs are the most common audio outputs on TVs and provide excellent and stable sound quality due to their digital connection.

While we haven’t tested many of these transmitters, it’s very common to find them online for a low price. The Mee Audio Connect Transmitter (opens in a new window) ($62.99) is one of the best-reviewed devices in its category on Amazon, as well as supporting 3.5mm and optical audio (though we can’t comment directly on their quality because they didn’t try).

If you don’t already have headphones for watching TV or don’t want to deal with Bluetooth pairing, you can always opt for wireless headphones. Just make sure it’s not a Bluetooth headset.

The vast majority of wireless headphones rely on Bluetooth (which is fine for most users), but if you intend to use a pair with your TV, you should get a pair with a dedicated transmitter. We haven’t tested many of these headphones, but some of the best-reviewed models on Amazon include the Avantree HT4189 (opens in a new window) ($99.99) and the Makemate BKM2000 (opens in a new window) ($75.99).
