It aims to lie in the liminal space between an ultra-portable speaker and a powerful entertainment companion, like its predecessor JBL Xtreme 2. However, it looks and feels very much like the previous iteration at the end of the day.

Editor’s Note: This JBL Xtreme 3 review was updated on March 10, 2022, to include a frequency response graph and answer some FAQs.

JBL Xtreme 3 survived immersion in water, making it a good companion for a trip to the park.

Review: Jbl Xtreme 3 Is A Durable Bluetooth Speaker Great For Bass Lovers

Like the JBL Flip 6 and some of our favorite JBL speakers, the JBL Xtreme 3 is a large cylinder with passive bass radiators on each end. The main driver in the middle is still a solid and reliable configuration. The Xtreme 3 has a tougher IP67 rating compared to its predecessor’s IPX7 rating. This means that the third generation speaker is resistant to both dust and water. The Xtreme 3 can survive a dip in the pond, plus dirt and sand does not get behind the grill.

But most of the similarities between the second and third generation Xtreme speakers end there. Xtreme 3 is

For a “portable” Bluetooth speaker and weighs 2.68 kg with the carrying strap. That means portables like folding chairs or grocery bags can be carried. You can sling it over your shoulder, but expect it to be heavy. After some time, you will feel the belt indent well. It will definitely add to the load if you are climbing a mountain, or even on a leisurely trail, with this speaker.

Instead, the purpose of the rope seems to be to get the speaker from point A to B, while leaving your hands free to carry beach supplies or party drinks. Speaking of drinks, there’s a handy bottle opener on the carrier strap in case you forget to bring one.

The JBL Xtreme 3 is a “portable” Bluetooth speaker in the sense that it includes a carrying strap, but it’s heavy and bulky.

JBL Xtreme 3 trades the small feet of Xtreme 2 for a textured area on the bottom – similar to JBL Clip 4. It seems less stable than the two clear places for the speaker to rest, which I like. As a result, it remains stable on flat surfaces, but requires more finesse on slopes or curves. The plastic bumpers at the end allow the speaker to bounce, especially if you drop the bass from the lower side of the radiator. Bumpers prevent dents and damage, but this also means that this area quickly collects scratches and marks.

Two USB ports are on the back, including a USB-C input/output port and a Type-A power port. Here you also get a 3.5mm aux input for wired playback. They are all behind a small door, which protects them from dust and dirt.

The JBL Xtreme 3 has buttons that are easy to turn off by feel, except for the power and Bluetooth buttons that are illuminated but not formed.

Jbl Xtreme 3 Portable Bluetooth Speaker Hands On

On the top of the JBL Xtreme 3, you will find the same control buttons as many other speakers from the brand. This includes volume adjustment, PartyBoost and a combination of play, pause and track skip buttons. JBL does not illuminate these buttons, but they are shaped differently from each other. The power and Bluetooth buttons are backlit, but not different in shape or feel. The battery indicator is located below the “JBL” logo which is now larger and more minimalist compared to the small red badge that adorns the Xtreme 2.

JBL Xtreme 3 supports PartyBoost and many other JBL speakers, but stereo mode only works with other JBL Xtreme 3.

JBL Xtreme 3 uses the JBL Portable app (iOS and Android), formerly “JBL Connect”, to install firmware updates and provide another place to access user manuals.

In the app, you can turn the speaker feedback tone on or off and activate PartyBoost without pressing a dedicated speaker button. But as with other speakers of the brand, stereo mode only works with two JBL Xtreme 3 speakers. So JBL Flip 5 I can do PartyBoost with Xtreme 3, but I can’t use Flip 5 in tandem with Xtreme 3 for stereo mode. The basic equalizer removes the features of the app and allows you to adjust the highs, mids and lows.

Jbl Xtreme 3 Portable Bluetooth Multimedia Speaker, Camo, Built In Powerbank, Ip67 Waterproof And Dustproof

JBL Xtreme 3 uses Bluetooth 5.1 and only supports Bluetooth SBC codec. Unlike many other portable speakers, this one has an auxiliary port. That means you can overcome some Bluetooth quality limitations. It makes sense to include it as well, because as mentioned earlier “portable” is a broad term here for large speakers.

With this speaker you get several Bluetooth hotspots, so you can connect up to two devices at once. But he did not remember the list of them. Instead, you have to connect to one and then another. You can then manually play and pause each content. Trying to add a third removes these two and binds the speaker exclusively to the device.

The JBL Xtreme 3 has a 3.5mm aux and a USB port hidden behind a cover, which helps keep out dust and dirt.

JBL claims that the Xtreme 3 can last up to 15 hours on a fully charged battery. This speaker is power hungry when charging and requires the included USB-C adapter in the box. This is a welcome upgrade from the proprietary port found on the Xtreme 2. It also means you can use two USB ports (one Type-C and one Type-A) to charge your phone or other devices while listening to music. You can even leave the speaker plugged in, plug another device into the USB-A port for charging,

Review: Jbl Xtreme 3

Our standard battery test uses music played continuously at a maximum output level of 75 dB(SPL) measured 1 meter from the front of the speaker. JBL Xtreme 3 lasted 19 hours and 38 minutes, exceeding the manufacturer’s estimate. That means this speaker will keep playing during party and camping sessions while you stay worry-free.

The JBL Xtreme 3 has a relatively standard response for a Bluetooth speaker, with a dip in the sub-bass note found in many other models.

The JBL Xtreme 3 might look like the Flip 5 or Flip 6 after zooming in on Photoshop, but the sound is different. You still get some typical frequency response, or “JBL signature sound”, that
