The JBL Xtreme 2 is a wireless boom box speaker. It’s loud and portable, rather than focusing on the kind of tech you see in smart speakers. However, Wi-Fi and proper support for a digital assistant are missing.

This is a portable speaker for audio lovers, even if its looks don’t suggest as much. However, don’t buy the JBL Xtreme 2 expecting the kind of booming or cartoonish bass response that its name and design suggest.
The JBL Xtreme 2 is a great battery-powered Bluetooth speaker. It’s not designed to sit in one place in your living room, it can’t send you music directly using Spotify Connect, nor can it request songs via voice command like you could. with Amazon Echo.
However, I have a weakness for these types of speakers. It’s an oversized version of the compact Bluetooth speakers some of you may have right now. You can take it from room to room or on adventures, whether it’s in the garden or on the beach.
The JBL Xtreme 2 is too big to even consider taking on a plane. But day trips? No problem.

The unit comes with a strap that connects each end of the Xtreme 2 via two carabiners. There is some shoulder padding in the middle of the strap, and it is quite comfortable to carry the speaker. This strap is key to cementing the Xtreme’s identity as a boombox-style unit.
It is also hard. The grille is made of sturdy fabric, probably a nylon-based fabric, and a thick rubber seal over the ports on the back gives the JBL Xtreme 2 IPX7 water resistance. Accidentally submerge it in a pool and it’ll be fine. IPX7 means the unit has been tested to be submerged in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.
The question isn’t really how good the JBL Xtreme 2 will be outdoors; it will be OK. It doesn’t matter if the speaker will look good in your home. It seems less grown-up than most smart speakers: the Harman Kardon GO+ Play 2, for example, the big Bluetooth speaker I usually recommend in this class.
The big passive radiators at each end, those metal carabiners, and the high-contrast JBL logo don’t quite live up to the idea of sophistication. Although I have a soft spot for the JBL Xtreme 2, I wouldn’t want it front and center in my living room.

In terms of technology, the JBL Xtreme 2 is fairly simple, but it has the right features for a speaker in this class. Battery life of up to 15 hours is excellent for such a large unit, thanks to a fairly generous 10,000mAh cell.
You can also use it to charge your phone. A full-size USB port is located on the rear of the unit, under the rubber cover, and an LED indicator behind the grille on the front lets you know how much charge is left.
It seems that the extras of the JBL Xtreme 2 are destined to be practically unused. You can configure one of the buttons at the top to access your phone’s digital assistant. With JBL Connect+, you can sync up multiple JBL speakers to play the same audio source. You’ll probably have to convince your friends to buy one: are you really going to let two of these loose in your house?
Aside from these extras, the JBL Xtreme 2 covers the usual basics. You can change the volume and play/pause the music with the integrated buttons on the top of the speaker. A microphone allows you to answer any incoming phone calls with your connected phone.

These also allow you to talk to your digital assistant through the Xtreme 2, but remember this is the functionality of an in-line remote, not a smart speaker. You need to press a button to access your phone’s assistant.
It’s easy to imagine JBL Xtreme 2 tunes for young partygoers. But the sound does not match this image.
The JBL Xtreme 2 sounds better than it should, with a lot more bass adjustment and balance than I expected. It’s the best JBL wireless speaker I’ve heard yet, with a sonic character closer to the JBL LSR305 studio monitors I use at home than the original Xtreme. The predecessor had bass to match the style and focused more on moving air than coherent sound.
In this second effort, the bass is integrated perfectly. It’s powerful and deep, lending kick drums and bass lines of realistic weight. But the bottom end was not “puffy” and distorted, I was pretty sure before I heard the JBL Xtreme 2 on it.

This is the crux of whether you should consider this speaker 5-star or 3-star. The JBL Xtreme 2 has decent bass, but it’s not an “Xtreme” bass.
The rest of the sound is on par with the best you’ll hear for the price. The treble is sweet, detailed, and fairly smooth. Mares have good texture; not the collected vacuum I was hoping for, having prejudged the JBL Xtreme 2 before I even opened its box.
Its combination of two 2.75-inch woofers, two 20mm drivers and passive radiators provide excellent sound dispersion throughout the room and a very relevant large-scale stereo image. This is a great sounding wireless speaker. Just make sure you buy one with the right expectations.
In gratitude for JBL’s sound choices here, I just have one more review. The JBL Xtreme 2 could probably belong in an “open-air” sound mode, as its refined approach to tone doesn’t necessarily travel all that well in open spaces.

The JBL Xtreme 2 is a great Bluetooth speaker for portable use. It sounds much more refined than it sounds, with the kind of tonal fidelity usually associated with a wireless hi-fi style unit.
Does that mean those expecting big bass will be disappointed? could. The JBL Xtreme 2’s basses are deep and powerful, but it’s clear the team behind its tuning had higher goals than club-style basses.
It’s a more portable match for the Harman Kardon Go + Play 2, which had already slipped off many shelves.
