Many people find speakers with built-in smart assistants useful for quick Google searches and hands-free music control, but they aren’t always the most portable solution. Speakers like the Google Home Max and even the Apple HomePod need to be plugged into the wall and connected to Wi-Fi to work. Not to mention they are quite expensive. Luckily, if you want something cheaper and more portable, it’s the JBL Link 20. Unlike the Google Home Max, you can connect to this speaker using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. But is it good?
The JBL Link 20 isn’t a tiny speaker, but it’s still portable enough to slip into a bag when needed.
One of the things I’ve noticed about speakers made by JBL is that they all share similar building materials, and the Link 20 is no exception. The speaker is approx 21cm tall and is wrapped in the same layer of fabric as the JBL Charge 4, Flip 4, and Clip 3. This means that, apart from looking very premium and feeling comfortable in the hand, the device is also IPX7 water resistant, which you don’t usually hear on the market. smart speakers. Whether you use it in the kitchen and spill a drink, or accidentally drop it in the pool in the yard, this speaker picks it up without a hitch. It’s worth mentioning that the speaker is quite large, so even though it has Bluetooth: I found it more useful indoors when connected via Wi-Fi, as you don’t have to move it around very often. If you’re looking for portable speakers, you’re better off buying something like the Flip 4 or Clip 3.

At the end of the speaker you’ll find a smooth plastic finish, although some textured rubber has been added to the bottom to help with grip. At the top are the playback controls and Bluetooth pairing locations and the Google Assistant button. Then there are two more buttons on the back of the speaker. One is the mute button which mutes the microphone when you don’t want to hear the clever “Okay Google” word, and the other is the power button with five little LEDs next to it that tells you how much battery life you have left. . On the bottom of the speaker is a small rubber cover that protects the micro-USB charging port from water damage, so be careful to keep it closed as that is basically the speaker’s only weak point.

As a smart speaker, the JBL Link 20 has a lot more to it than its Bluetooth-only sibling like the Flip and Charge series. On the one hand, it should be able to detect your voice from all distances and in all environments. There are two remote microphones on the top that can pick up your voice even when music is playing at maximum volume. It may not sound like it, but it’s very impressive and useful. You don’t know how annoying smart speakers can be until you scream “OK, Google” and get no response.
Voice commands also work well outdoors, but I found you have to be closer to the speaker for it to register because there’s a lot going on outdoors. Another nice touch is the four plastic-mounted LED lights on the top of the speaker that light up with your voice so you know exactly when the speaker is listening. They also act as a volume indicator when you increase or decrease the volume.

Just as the JBL Link 20 has similar build quality to other JBL speakers, it also stands out when it comes to connectivity. As I already mentioned, it connects via Wi-Fi in addition to Bluetooth 4.2. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a high-quality streaming codec if you want to connect via Bluetooth, but luckily the Wi-Fi capabilities make up for it. This means you can extend the usual 30-foot range to your router. For me, that means I can shower and listen to podcasts while visiting family on the weekends and just take the speakers to the side
