The JBL GO 3 is a cheap and simple Bluetooth speaker suitable for any outdoor trip. It’s a very light product but it works well, the IP67 rating means it’s great for the beach or trails.
With its Flip, Clip and Charge lines, among other things, JBL has earned a real reputation as one of the great competitors in the outdoor Bluetooth speaker market. The JBL GO 3 represents a big aesthetic difference compared to its predecessor. Gone is the iconic rectangular design, replaced by a rubberized, rugged, compact little unit that’s ready for the hike or the pool.
Outdoor enthusiasts who need something with an IP67 rating for the trails or the beach, anyone who wants something compact to leave on the patio or balcony, and shower singers who want to hang out something to sing about.

A lot of Bluetooth speakers make gradual changes in successive entries, so it’s a bit surprising to see how much of a difference the JBL GO 3 makes. In many ways, this portable Bluetooth speaker has more in common with the likes of the UE WONDERBOOM line than the simple plastic rectangle that is the GO 2.
The new GO 3, as before, is mostly plastic, but it has some new physical features. The speaker is round, oval in shape, covered with tightly woven material and rubberized plastic. Like the GO 2, the sound comes out of one side (decorated with the JBL logo) and the other is covered with a plastic patch so that the speaker can lie flat without sliding. The fabric that covers most of the JBL GO 3 creates just the right amount of texture, so it’s easy to hold.
Also new to the JBL GO 3 is a cloth strap that can be used to hang the speaker on a hook or attach it to a bag. The loop is permanently attached to the speaker and is convenient if you want something you can put on and forget about for an afternoon. Although the loop is small, it is definitely big enough to hang in the shower stall.
In fact, using the JBL GO 3 is easy. On the side of the fabric above the JBL logo there are three buttons with a high profile for adjusting the volume and playback. Because they are large and have a different shape, it is easy to adjust the volume by touch. The speaker also has two buttons on the opposite side of its strap for power and Bluetooth pairing – just tap the pairing button and once you hear the guitar strum, select the speaker from the device’s Bluetooth menu. The speaker isn’t compatible with the JBL Portable app, so at first you’ll only see what you get.

The JBL GO 3 is IP67 rated for dust and water resistance, which means it’s relatively indestructible and can withstand full submersion in up to one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. However, while it’s very durable, it’s not ideal for those looking for a pool speaker for one reason: it doesn’t float. You can play any kind of music and the speaker sounds great even when the fabric cover is soaked, but once you get in the pool, it goes straight to the bottom and picks up the tunes.
The JBL GO 3 and GO 2 are very different products, with different looks and some differences under the hood. As mentioned above, the JBL GO 3 has an IP67 rating, which is a step up from the IPX7 rating of the GO 2, which guarantees a high level of water resistance but not dust resistance. The JBL GO 3 has also dropped the microUSB charging port for USB-C. The fabric loop is also new.
However, these are not all updates. The JBL GO 2 is priced the same as the GO 3 and supports wired audio over 3.5mm. It also includes a speakerphone, so if you’re at the beach and you get a call, you can answer it without unpairing your devices (although everyone nearby can hear both sides of the conversation talk). The GO 2 also comes in more colors, with a total of 12 different options compared to the Go 3’s five colors.
The JBL GO 3 is a Bluetooth speaker that uses firmware 5.1 to connect to your device of choice. It only supports the SBC codec, which is a bit disappointing, but not too surprising – external speakers rarely go for high-quality codecs like aptX or AAC. The GO 3 looks great working as an adventure speaker, although you may encounter some audio-visual lag when watching paired videos.
