Third time’s a charm, right? When it comes to the JBL Flip 3 Bluetooth Speaker, it is. This third-generation model has a more streamlined design, splash resistance and better battery life (10 hours), while the price remains the same at $100, £100 or $150. And as with all of these speakers, the JBL plays any audio from a Bluetooth-enabled source—almost any smartphone or tablet and the latest computers—as long as it’s in the same room or relatively close.
The JBL Flip 3 is a highly portable, splash-proof Bluetooth speaker designed for horizontal or vertical use. It sounds great and plays really loud for its size, can act as a speaker and offers an improved battery life of up to 10 hours. You can also connect multiple Flip 3 speakers wirelessly using the free JBL Connect app.
Enhanced with better battery life and a splash-resistant design, the Flip 3 is one of the best portable Bluetooth speakers out there.

We received a black review unit, but the speaker, which weighs less than a pound (15.9 ounces or 450 grams), is available in seven other colors and, like its predecessors, can be positioned vertically or horizontally. Since one of the bass ports is slightly covered when you go into portrait mode, you get a little more bass in landscape mode.
A carrying case isn’t included with the speaker as it was with the JBL Flip 2 (this headset launched at $120, then dropped to $100). But it looks very durable, and like I said, it’s waterproof and has a flap that securely covers the USB charging port and audio input.
At first I thought there was no pause/play button on the speaker, but it turns out the answer/end button doubles as a pause/play button and also lets you skip tracks forward and backward (tap double tap to go forward, triple tap to skip back).
As for other extras, it is equipped with a built-in speaker with noise and echo cancellation, and you can connect multiple JBL Connect compatible speakers to amplify the sound. (JBL Connect is a free app for iOS and Android devices.) The speaker uses Bluetooth 4.1 technology and has a typical wireless broadcast range of about 33 feet or 10 meters.

Pairing two of these would be nice, but a Flip 3 sounds good and plays pretty loud for its volume with ample bass, although this speaker has its limitations. The original Flip delivered 2 x 5 watts of sound, while the Flip 2 has been increased to 6 watts. This model gets an extra 8W and it makes a difference.
For the same price, you get the UE Roll, which is fully waterproof and is another speaker I really like at this price. The Roll has a flatter design and is more outward facing (no speaker), but the two speakers are somewhat similar. However, the Flip 3 plays a little louder.
We also compared the Flip 3 to JBL’s 15-watt UE Boom and Charge 2+. Both models sound a bit fuller and offer a slightly deeper sound.

The optimal listening distance for the Flip 3 is between 3 and 12 feet (1 and 4 meters), with the volume set to about 75%. Going back and forth between the more expensive UE Boom, I found that it disperses sound better over a wider area and sounds better than the Flip 3 when you’re further away from it. Of course, none of these small speakers offer much, if any, stereo separation.
It’s starting to sound like a broken record, but with all the built-in Bluetooth speakers, performance varies from track to track. Case in point: The Veronicas’ “You Ruined Me” and “Untouched.” “You Ruined Me,” a rock song, plays right into the Flip 3’s strengths—all of these built-in speakers tend to sound better in the midrange. But the heavier driving of “Untouched” gets a little harsh when the electric guitar strums and the other instruments play. The UE Boom and Charge 2+ fare a bit better, but almost all of these small Bluetooth speakers distort when you crank up the volume and hit them with heavy or complex material.
That’s a pretty long way of saying that these types of speakers aren’t intended for critical listeners, but most people will be impressed with how the Flip 3 sounds for its size, especially in places like the kitchen, bedroom, or backyard. from behind. . We listen to a lot of these little speakers, and while we always find them flawed, some – including this one – perform better than others.
If you compare this model to the JBL Charge 2+, which costs about $30 more, this speaker is slightly larger, weighs 600g versus 450, sounds slightly better, has an extra two hours of battery life, and also serves. as a USB charging port to charge your phone. I rate the Charge 2+ a bit higher, but if you want a more compact speaker and want to save some money, the Flip 3 is impressive for a small speaker at this price and worth checking out.

The buttons are self-explanatory, except for the call button. When I first saw the JBL Flip 3, I was looking for the play/pause button, but I couldn’t find it.
After reading the quick setup guide, I realized that the call button is also the play/pause button.
Similar to the iOS remote, pressing the “Call/Play/Pause” button twice will allow you to skip to the next song. Unfortunately, triple pressing doesn’t let you go back to the previous song.
There are two ports on the JBL Flip 3, one is Micro USB for charging headphones and the other is an additional 3.5mm port.
