JBL’s Charge 3 is a USB phone charger with a built-in Bluetooth speaker. Or maybe there is another way. Either way, it comes with rugged water resistance, plenty of battery to keep you juiced up if your phone breaks, and you can daisy-chain speakers from the same brand to pump up the volume.

This is a feature you can’t find on every Bluetooth speaker and it comes at a reasonable price, so there has to be a catch, right?

About the size of a thermos and covered in tightly woven fabric, the Charge 3 is essentially cylindrical, but has a flat platform at the bottom to ensure it sits. The top row of buttons offers a variety of controls: Bluetooth pairing, volume adjustment, and play/pause, which you can quickly double-press to skip tracks or continue to invoke Siri or Google Assistant on Android from your phone.
In the middle, next to the power button, you’ll find one that looks like a cross between an hourglass and an infinity symbol. This is used to activate the JBL Connect feature, which allows you to connect other JBL products to form a symphony of speakers playing the same song from the same phone.
I only have one, so I can’t test it, but in theory it’s only limited by funds and logistics, so if you can get 500 speakers supported in the same place, you can really test the patience of your neighbors.
On the back, there’s a flap that covers the usual micro USB for charging, a 3.5mm jack for anyone still holding onto an old iPod Classic, and another socket you don’t usually see on portable Bluetooth speakers: a full-size USB port. .

The Charge 3’s huge battery (6000 mAh, twice the size of the Samsung Galaxy S8) can be used to charge the phone. It’s not quite a replacement for a pocket charger, but it’s certainly a nice option to have. Of course, this will eat into the battery, but with around 20 hours on hand, you may be able to lose a bit. After re-watching Inception recently, I used it to charge another Bluetooth speaker. A five-light indicator on the base shows how much is left and, if plugged in, how long it will take to charge.
The exposed bass port on one end will make you question its water resistance, but I took it in the shower along with a Wash ‘n’ Go bottle and the water bounced off like a duck in a cagoule. If you prefer a hot tub, you can put 1 meter of water in it for 30 minutes. Make sure the back cover is closed properly
My review sample came in mint green, like mint chocolate chip ice cream, but not as good. Any black, blue or red version is better, and the gray is only worth considering if you like boring things.
Although almost all cylinders, the sound coming from the Charge 3 is fairly one-way. That’s not to say it’s like Harry Styles and co, but you won’t get the full effect of 20W of power unless you’re in front of it.

That’s an impressive player. Physically, it’s a bit lumpier than the UE Boom 2, but that allows it to sound so tight and no-nonsense. The sound is well-rounded with good balance, although it sometimes lacks a bit of excitement, so you have to turn it up a notch to get the best out of it.
It’s so good and very loud, with propulsive, well-controlled bass that doesn’t get too noisy. When you pump up the Charge 3, you can see those woofers on each end doing something — it can be amazing to watch your music play.
That said, the midrange can be a little low at times, with vocals sometimes coming across a bit thin and busy tracks that get a little muddled, but the exception is more than the rule, and the top end is always crisp and tight.
Sometimes I find there’s a mismatch between the music volume and the notification sound sent from the phone when I get a message, and the power on/off sound is a bit Jar Jar Binks, but it does the job. without sending you running for instructions.

There is a built-in app that you can use to pair other speakers and change the built-in function of the play/pause button, but if you never download it, you won’t lose it.
There’s very little to criticize about the Charge 3. The solid design means it doesn’t feel like a premium product, but overall the audio performance will be different.
It sounds better than UE’s Wonderboom, but it’s more expensive and it’s not as compact, but it’s cheaper than the UE Boom 2, but it’s probably not as good and it’s definitely not as neat, which leaves you with three complicated modes. .
For many, price may be the deciding factor, and if you decide to spend £135 on the Charge 3, you won’t regret it.
