Jbl Flip 5 Vs Charge 4: A Comparative Review

We have noticed that you already have spare parts in your cart. In order to add new products, we need to empty your current cart. If you want to prepare for the future and get the new JBL Connect +, this is the way to go. Otherwise, there’s not much difference between this one and the Charge 3 before it (although USB-C charging is definitely fine).

When you’re in the market for a Bluetooth speaker, one brand tends to be preferred over others. JBL has options in basically every price range, but for the price their best speakers have always been the Charge series. The JBL Charge 4 speaker is a few years old now, but you can still find it at various retailers. How well has it held up since its initial release?

At first glance, the Charge 4 doesn’t look any different from the previous Charge 3. But if you look a little closer, you’ll start to notice some small differences in construction and size. The Charge 4 is slightly larger in each way by about a centimeter, but it’s also heavier at 165 grams (7.05 ounces). While that’s obviously not a big deal, it’s not good news if you’ve been relying on the speaker’s portability. When youarerunning, an ounce in the morning is a pound at night. That said, it shouldn’t really make a practical difference to day-to-day activities. You should be able to throw this in a backpack without any problems.

JBL has also upgraded the 6000mAh battery in the Charge 3 to around 7500mAh in the Charge 4. Furthermore, the Charge 4 still retains most of the features that made the Charge 3 so great.

Jbl Charge 4 Review: The Best Value Bluetooth Speaker?

Yes, the tough waterproof fabric is back along with the IPX7 certification that allows you to submerge in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. It also floats a bit if you drop it in the water, so you don’t have to worry about losing it if you fall off a boat or deck. They also have the double passive radiators exposed at both ends, just like most new JBL speakers in recent years.

Editor’s note: Sara tested the IPX7 rating of a JBL Flip 4 by submerging it in a pool for about 10 seconds and it came out broken. The speaker still produced sound, but the sound was covered by a loud crack. JBL customer support stated that the one-year warranty was over and defective products outside the warranty could not be replaced free of charge. Considering that JBL is a company whose main differential is waterproofing, this was disappointing.

At the top you will have the game buttons that are slightly raised above the fabric, along with an on / off and Bluetooth button. The bottom is a small built-in stand with five small LED lights that let you know how much battery life is left at the touch of the button, and on the back there’s a rubber flap that keeps all the ports secure likes water. . You’ll definitely want to make sure this is closed when you take this to the beach or swing by the pool.

Connecting to the speaker might not be as simple as your AirPods, but it’s still pretty easy. Once you turn it on, all you have to do is press the Bluetooth button located next to the power button to enter pairing mode. From there, simply search for the device in the Bluetooth settings to connect to it.

If you don’t already know, the JBL Charge 4 is not much different from the previous model. It’s iteration within an iteration, but connection is where things start to split. The Charge 4 has all its bases covered with a strong connection up to about 30 feet, just like most Bluetooth speakers. The Playback controls work great and the buttons are nice and clickable, although I wish the buttons were made of white plastic or were all lit up like the power button as it’s hard to see which is which when it’s on dark. The Charge 4 also doesn’t have a built-in microphone, so if you frequently use the speakerphone for phone calls, you might be annoyed. Personally, I never want a microphone on my speaker and I always end up fumbling to pull out my phone every time I get a call, so this is really a positive thing for me, but I can see how this could be a problem may be for some.

On paper, you’ll notice that the JBL Charge 4 has Bluetooth 4.2 instead of the older 4.1, which is good, but the real differences have to do with JBL Connect. If you have never owned a JBL speaker before, JBL Connect is the feature that allows you to sync a pair of speakers together to play the same song. It’s not really the equivalent of a Sonos system, but if you’re having a party, it can certainly get the job done. JBL Connect + is a better version of the old JBL Connect and you can connect up to 100 JBL speakers together instead of one or two. If you happen to own a mansion, this would be a cool party trick.

Unfortunately, if you bought an older speaker with regular JBL Connect (like the Charge 3), it is not compatible with this new plus version. So if you and a few friends will splurge on 100 of these and throw a “Project X” style party, this may be a source in which you may be interested in. For the average person, I doubt it matters much.

There are small LED lights on the stand that let you know how much juice is left.
