If you’re looking to future proof yourself and get the new JBL Connect+, this is it. Otherwise, there isn’t much difference between this and the Charge 3 (although USB-C charging is good).
When you’re in the market for a Bluetooth speaker, one brand tends to pop up more often than others. JBL has options at basically every price point, but for the price their best speakers are always the Charge series. The JBL Charge 4 speaker is a few years old now, but you can still find it at various retailers. How well has it held up since its initial release?
At first glance, the Charge 4 doesn’t look that different from its predecessor, the Charge 3. But if you look a little closer, you’ll start to notice some small differences in build and size. The Charge 4 is slightly larger in every way by a centimeter, but it is also 165 grams (7.05 ounces) heavier. While that’s obviously not a big deal, it’s not good news if you’re relying on the speaker’s portability. If you’re hiking, an ounce in the morning is a pound in the evening. That said, it shouldn’t really have a practical impact on your daily activities. You should be able to throw it in a backpack without any problem.
JBL has also upgraded the battery from 6000 mAh in the Charge 3 to around 7500 mAh in the Charge 4. Additionally, the Charge 4 still retains most of the features that made the Charge 3 so great.

Yes, the tough waterproof fabric is making a comeback along with an IPX7 certification that allows you to submerge in one meter of water for 30 minutes. It also floats a bit when you drop it in the water, so you don’t have to worry about losing it if it falls off your boat or deck. These, like most new JBL speakers in recent years, have dual passive radiators on one end.
Editor’s note: Sara tested the JBL Flip 4’s IPX7 rating by submerging it in a pool for about 10 seconds, and it came out broken. The speaker was still producing sound, but the sound was covered by a loud screeching sound. JBL’s customer service said that the 1-year warranty has expired and defective products out of warranty cannot be replaced for free. Considering JBL is a company that sells its waterproofs, this was disappointing.

The bottom is a small stand with five small LED lights that let you know how much battery life is left when you press the power button, and there is a rubber sheet on the back that keeps all the ports protected from water. Connecting to the speaker might not be as easy as your AirPods, but it’s still pretty easy. As soon as you turn it off, you just need to press the Bluetooth button next to the power button to enter the pairing mode. After that, find the device in your Bluetooth settings to connect to it.
If you still can’t tell, the JBL Charge 4 isn’t that different from the previous model. It’s an iteration, but the connectivity is where things start to fall apart. The Charge 4 has all your bases covered with a solid connection of around 30 meters, like most Bluetooth speakers. The playback controls work great and the buttons are nice and clicky, although I wish the buttons were made of white plastic or backlit like the power button, as it’s hard to see what’s what when it’s dark. The Charge 4 also doesn’t have a built-in microphone; so if you tend to use the speakerphone for phone calls, you’re going to be annoyed. Personally, I never want a microphone on my speakerphone and I always struggled to turn the phone off every time I got a call, so this is actually a positive thing for me, but I can see how it could be a deal breaker for some. .
On paper, you’ll notice that the JBL Charge 4 has Bluetooth 4.2 instead of the older 4.1, which is good, but the real differences have to do with JBL Connect. If you’ve never had JBL speakers before, JBL Connect is a feature that allows you to sync multiple speakers together to play the same song. It’s not really on par with a Sonos system, but if you’re throwing a party, it could definitely do the job. JBL Connect+ is an improved version of the older JBL Connect and allows you to connect up to 100 JBL speakers instead of just one or two. If you have a mansion, this would be a cool party trick.
Unfortunately, if you bought an older speaker with the regular JBL Connect (like the Charge 3), it won’t be compatible with this new Plus version. So, if you and a few friends are going 100 out of it and throwing a “Project X” style party, this might be a feature you’ll be interested in. For the average person, I doubt it matters much.

If you’re having trouble connecting your Charge 4, it might be a good idea to reset it and start from scratch. To do this, follow these steps:

Although the JBL Charge 4 has a much larger battery capacity than the Charge 3, both have the same 20 hours of continuous playback. In our tests, we managed to blast the Charge 4 for 13 hours and 46 minutes of straight music. It wasn’t quite the 20 hours they promised, but it’s still not bad. However, it will be a big hit if you decide to charge your devices via the rear USB-A output as well. You will also find a 3.5 mm input and a USB Type-C input on the back, but the Type-C can only be used for charging. So if you have a Type-C to Type-C cable and you were hoping to charge your new Android phone or iPad Pro from that port, you’re out of luck. You have to use the USB-A port to charge anything.
This was the part that surprised me the most, because I expected the sound quality to be better compared to the Charge 3, but it seems to be very similar to my ears. JBL went with a single driver this time with dual drivers, but apart from a few minor gripes, I don’t think many people buying this speaker will notice. Like its predecessor, the new JBL Charge 4 has a solid low-end for its size, which is certainly helped by those passive radiators.
