It aims to straddle the line between ultra-portable speakers and powerful entertainment buddies, much like its predecessor the JBL Xtreme 2. However, it still looks and feels like the previous iteration at the end of the day.

Editor’s note: This JBL Xtreme 3 review was updated on March 10, 2022 to include a frequency response plot and answer some frequently asked questions.

The JBL Xtreme 3 survives immersion in water, making it a good companion for walks in the park.

Jbl Xtreme 3 Bluetooth Hangszóró Teszt

Like the JBL Flip 6 and some of our favorite JBL speakers, the JBL Xtreme 3 is a large cylinder with passive bass radiators at each end. The main drivers in the center are still a solid and reliable configuration. The Xtreme 3 has a tougher IP67 rating compared to its predecessor’s IPX7 rating. This means that the third generation speaker is resistant to dust and water. The Xtreme 3 can survive a dip in the pool, plus dirt and sand don’t get behind the grill.

But most of the similarities between the second and third generation Xtreme speakers end there. Xtreme 3 is

The bluetooth speaker is “portable” and weighs 2.68 kg with the carrying strap. That means it’s portable in the way that a folding chair or grocery bags are portable. You can sling it over your shoulder, but expect to notice the weight. After a while, you’ll feel the belt too It would definitely add effort if you were to climb mountains or even go on a relaxing trail with this speaker.

Instead, the intent of the strap seems to be to get the speaker from point A to point B, while keeping your hands free to carry beach gear or party drinks. Speaking of drinks, there’s a handy bottle opener on the carrying strap in case you forget to bring one.

Jbl Xtreme 3 Review

The JBL Xtreme 3 is a “portable” Bluetooth speaker in the sense that it has a carrying strap, but it’s heavy and bulky.

The JBL Xtreme 3 trades the small feet of the Xtreme 2 for a textured area on the bottom – similar to the JBL Clip 4. It feels less stable than the two clean places for the speaker to rest, which I prefer. As a result, it remains stable on flat surfaces, but requires more finesse on slopes or curves. The plastic bumpers on the ends allow the speaker to bounce around, especially if you drop it down with the bass radiator side down. Bumpers prevent dents and damage, but this also means that these areas quickly collect scratches and marks.

Two USB ports are on the back, including one USB-C input/output port and a Type-A output port. You also get a 3.5mm aux input here for wired operation. All of these are behind small doors, protecting them from dust and debris.

The JBL Xtreme 3 has buttons that are easy to turn off by touch, except for the power and Bluetooth buttons, which are backlit but not otherwise designed.

On top of the JBL Xtreme 3, you will find the same control buttons as on many other speakers from this brand. These include volume control, PartyBoost and an integrated play, pause and track skip button. JBL does not have a backlight for these buttons, but they are designed differently from each other. The power and Bluetooth buttons are backlit, but no different in shape or feel. The battery indicator is just below the large and now minimalist “JBL” logo compared to the small red badge that adorns the Xtreme 2.

JBL Xtreme 3 supports PartyBoost with many other JBL speakers, but stereo mode only works with other JBL Xtreme 3s.

JBL Xtreme 3 uses the JBL Portable app (iOS and Android), formerly “JBL Connect”, to install firmware updates and provide an additional place to access the user manual.

In the app, you can turn the speaker feedback on or off and activate PartyBoost without pressing a dedicated button on the speaker. But as with other speakers of this brand, stereo mode only works with two JBL Xtreme 3 speakers. So my JBL Flip 5 can do PartyBoost with Xtreme 3, but I can’t use Flip 5 at the same time as Xtreme 3 for stereo mode. A basic equalizer completes the app’s features and allows you to adjust treble, midrange and bass.

The JBL Xtreme 3 uses Bluetooth 5.1 and only supports the SBC Bluetooth codec. However, unlike many other portable speakers, this speaker has an aux port. This means you can overcome some of the limitations of Bluetooth quality. It makes sense to include one, because as mentioned, “portable” is a broad term here for such a large speaker.

With this speaker you get Bluetooth multipoint, so you can connect up to two devices at the same time. But he doesn’t remember their list. Instead, you have to connect to one and then the other. You can then manually play and pause content in each. Trying to add a third deletes these two and connects the speaker only to that device.

The JBL Xtreme 3 has 3.5mm aux and USB ports hidden behind a cover, which helps protect it from dust and dirt.

JBL claims the Xtreme 3 can last up to 15 hours on a fully charged battery. This speaker is power hungry when charging and as such requires a USB-C adapter included in the box. This is a welcome upgrade from the proprietary port found on the Xtreme 2. It also means you can use two USB ports (one Type-C and one Type-A) to charge your phone or other devices while listening to music. You can even leave the speaker on, connect another device to the USB Type-A port for charging,

Jbl Xtreme 3

Our standard battery test uses music played continuously with a maximum output level of 75 dB(SPL) measured 1 meter from the front of the speaker. The JBL Xtreme 3 lasted 19 hours and 38 minutes, beating the manufacturer’s estimate. This means that this speaker will keep playing during your parties and camping trips, so you don’t have to worry about it.

The JBL Xtreme 3 has a relatively standard response for Bluetooth speakers, with a reduction in sub-bass found in many other models.

The JBL Xtreme 3 may look a bit like the Flip 5 or Flip 6 after zooming in on Photoshop, but it sounds different. However, you still get some of that signature frequency response, or “JBL signature sound,” that defines the brand (ie, boosted bass). This speaker can reproduce frequencies between 53.5Hz-20kHz. While the aux port ensures lossless playback, that’s it
