Harman Kardon Soundsticks Bluetooth – Most of the reviews I offer are usually new gear that has just been launched, but every now and then I like to take a look at a classic piece of kit that has stood the test of time and is just as good today as it was back then. introduced and sometimes even better due to incremental improvements and lower prices.
This month I thought I’d take a look at a product category that we don’t hear about as much these days since many of us use laptops or handheld devices. I’m talking about 2.1 computer speakers. There’s no doubt that the market for computer subwoofers has shrunk significantly with the proliferation of laptops, tablets, and smartphones. However, gamers still love our desktops, and those in the Apple camp still enjoy our iMacs and Mac Minis.

Indeed, there is something about a desktop computer that instills a little needed discipline that makes you want to sit down at your desk and focus a little more on one task at a time. But that doesn’t mean using the desktop isn’t fun. Sometimes it can be nice to sit at your desk and watch a movie, play a game or two, or even enjoy listening to your favorite album through the speakers while you write, especially if you’re working alone.

The first computer speakers I ever bought for myself were a pair of Harman Kardon speakers that debuted in 2001, a year after Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in July 2000. Soundbars and the first edition of soundbars connected to a Mac via USB. The design was stunning at the time. A transparent dome-shaped subwoofer with a soft blue LED impressed Apple fans, while the visible speakers looked very futuristic with their four silver drivers and donut-shaped stands. It’s probably fair to say that Soundsticks have had an iconic industrial design look for nearly two decades.
Today’s soundtracks aren’t all that different from those early days. The blue LED has been replaced by white and the speakers look very similar instead of silver speakers and the new versions now have a volume knob on the right side. Sound bar with touch control capability. Another change from those early Soundsticks is that there is no longer a USB connection to transfer audio from the computer to the speakers. The third version of Harman Kardon soundbars now uses a plain old analog connection that ends in a 3.5mm stereo jack that plugs directly into your computer’s sound card. There’s also a Bluetooth version of the Soundsticks if you’re willing to pay a bit more, but honestly, I’d go with the basic wired model and add a separate Bluetooth receiver later if you want one.
Setting up the Soundsticks is as easy as ever. Connect both speakers to a nice transparent subwoofer and plug in the power supply. Then it is enough to connect the 3.5 mm jack to the computer and turn on the power. My first attempt ended with no sound from the speakers. It took me a while to figure out that the touch volume control on the right of the Soundstick works separately from the computer volume control, and that the volume can be turned up on the iMac or PC, but nothing comes out of the speakers. I soon realized that I needed to install the sound on the Soundsticks, and then I got down to business.
The bass on the Soundsticks is powerful with a rotary knob to adjust the amount of bass you want to produce. The best place for the subwoofer is probably under the table, but this makes things a bit difficult when you want to adjust the bass settings. I recommend doing this before the last sitting under the table where it can be forgotten. Of course, there is always the option of placing the subwoofer on a table, as it is certainly big enough to deserve some table space and is a good speaker… you need a big table.

One thing I really like about the Harman Kardon Soundsticks is how realistic they are with the alerts and alarms your computer emits, which you would normally hear through the small speakers installed on most desktop computers. The music from the soundbars is also very good. They may not be as good as an expensive custom hi-fi setup, but for the money you can’t beat these speakers for listening to music while in front of your computer. Surprisingly, Harman Kardon speakers are cheaper today than they were when they were introduced nearly 20 years ago. Now they’re at a price that makes them an absolute steal and for anyone with an iMac, Mac Mini, or desktop PC in need of an upgrade.

Verdict: Harman Kardon’s iconic soundbars haven’t aged at all. They don’t look dated and are just as stylish today as the day they were introduced. They’re great value for money and while the sound may not be the best hi-fi quality, it’s more than adequate as a work or study speaker and will soon be slapping your fingers as you type.
