The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 is a portable, waterproof Bluetooth speaker that looks more like a design piece than something that gets wet and works in the rain. The pricing for the Onyx Studio 6 is definitely confusing – the list price of $479.95 has been replaced by a regular retail price of anywhere from $200 to $300, which includes Harman Kardon. In that cheap price range, the speaker is a solid value. Anyone wanting a precise mix should be serenaded, but mega-bass enthusiasts looking for portable thunder will be pleased with the outdoor-friendly design.
The Onyx Studio 6 is a straight, circular speaker with a cutout, rubberized handle that makes it look like a handbag from some angles. Available in black, blue, or gray, the 11.2-by-11.5-by-5.0-inch (HWD), 6.5-inch speaker has plenty of height, so you’ll need quite a bit of handling.

The IPX7 rating means the speaker can technically be submerged up to a meter, although the Bluetooth signal doesn’t work well under water. The point is that the water is thin or in the rain. Just make sure the screen connection port is closed.

Why not? For a speaker with such heavy depth, an app with EQ would have been really useful. And some users may appreciate the speaker function – it’s not on the Onyx Studio 6.
On tracks with more intense sub-bass content such as Knives’ “Silent Jubilation”, the Onyx Studio 6 clearly delivers deep bass that will vibrate most surfaces it’s laid on. At high volumes, the bass does not distort, although it dilutes a bit, but the DSP (digital signal processing) kicks in to prevent distortion.

For tracks that don’t have that kind of bonkers sub-bass, but still pack some serious low-frequency punch—like almost all the tracks on Apple’s new record Fiona;
– Onyx Studio 6 still delivers thunder and then some. Fortunately, it doesn’t overwhelm the mix, but playing this record at high volume gives the venue an almost live PA feel, with intense bass kicking in the drum hits.
Bill Callahan’s “Drover” track with the bass in the mix is less deep, giving us a better sense of the studio’s 6 overall sound signature. The drums here sound like thunder, or Godzilla-shaped drums. Low-frequency fiends will get their fix, but anyone looking for an accurate mix will be disappointed that there’s no app to dial things back. Fortunately, the high frequencies are still under-represented, so that we are somewhat balanced, you can mix the hollow with the powerful basses, and the highs are comparable to the carvings.

In Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum loop gets enough high-mid presence to keep its attack sound, but also has some serious extra low-frequency heft. The sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the delivery are a little less intense, though, so we know the limits of this low end. The sub-bass knife can relate to the extension, but it becomes thinner at high volume, and the trouble reaches up to these really deep synth hits. But don’t worry, Basse, lovers: the rest is roaring so loudly that you don’t see what’s missing. The drum loop here packs a punch at the lower end along the edge wider than the exact reproduction of this mix. The vocals on this track aren’t overpowering at all, everything is thunderous, they sound crisp and clear, and they just lack any extra hiss.
Getting through this speaker can be annoying, but the bass doesn’t sound crazy enough as it mixes in classics and classics. The upper register brass, strings and vocals still retain the spotlight, but although things are proportioned, it is far from an exact sound signature.
On the purely sound side, the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 offers the kind of noise bass lovers are looking for. At the gate, he wants to spend a little time, some investment. The $400 JBL Boombox 2 is powerful and has stereo drivers, and we’re also fans of the $250 Sony SRS-XB43 and $150 Sony SRS-XB33. All of these speakers can withstand water exposure, and some even feature an LED light display. But it’s hard to match the Onyx Studio 6’s main selling point: gonzo bass response. If that’s what you want, you’ll be happy.

The Harman/Kardon Onyx Studio 6 is a portable Bluetooth speaker with a unique rounded design. It’s easy to use thanks to its integrated handle, and it also has an IPX7 water resistance rating, although we haven’t tested it this way. With a medium, balanced sound profile, it is well suited to listening to a wide range of audio material, although it struggles to reproduce heavy bass. It’s not very powerful, and it lacks sound optimizations like EQ.
Harman/Kardon Onyx Studio 6 is the ultimate music. It has a very balanced, neutral sound that makes it suitable for listening to many different musical styles. However, like many smaller speakers, it struggles to reproduce a shrill, chunky, low bass, which can be frustrating if you like heavy genres like hip-hop. Mono content has a stereo downmix, doesn’t sound immersive, and lacks sound optimization features.
