Google Wifi has been my favorite Wi-Fi system since it launched in late 2016. The next generation, called Nest, is available now and is a decided improvement in [almost] every way.

Nest Wifi is an evolution of Google Wifi, with notable features that honestly just make sense – like the fact that the hotspots have Nest Minis built in (whatever), so you get Google Assistant directly from your Wifi hotspots. This is such a smart decision.

But Nest Wifi is not the only Google Wifi and Nest Minis joins the bottom of the points. There are better radios for more coverage, which ultimately means you can cover more areas with fewer points. A home that would take three Google Wifi devices (Google Wifi? Why are products so hard to diversify these days?) can get full coverage with just two Nest Wifi devices (the router and a point). Here’s a look at the Nest Wifi range:

That’s a lot of coverage from just one or two devices—Google tells me that one router and one point should cover most US homes, making Nest Wifi easier to set up and manage. But it gets better.

Best of all, you can combine Nest Wifi with Google Wifi. In theory, you could add the Nest Wifi point to your existing Google Wifi setup, but it really makes more sense to add the Google Wifi module to a Nest Wifi setup, as the Nest router is a complete upgrade over the Google Wifi router.

So, for example, since I’ve been using Google Wifi for most of the last three years, I already have a Google Wifi router and two hotspots. Before I put Nest Wifi, I factory reset all three Google Wifi devices, then replaced the router with a point and Nest Wifi. I left a Google Wifi point in place.

Better than Google Wifi, it also has some drawbacks – like the fact that hotspots no longer have Ethernet ports. I had things connected to each of my Google Wifi points – my desktop on one and the Hue bridge on the other – which you can’t do with Nest Wifi. I just changed the desktop to a Wi-Fi connection, which was fine. I can’t even remember why I used a wired connection in the first place. Read H.

But the Hue Bridge was another matter entirely. I used to connect it directly to the Google Wifi router, but the light in my office (on the other side of the house) often couldn’t connect to the bridge. So I added a Wifi point in the dining room, which is more central, and attached the Hue bridge to it. Problem solved.

With Nest Wifi, this scenario is not possible. If I was not already a Google Wifi user then I’m not sure what I would do – move the Hue bridge and hope for the best? Probably at first. Buy an extra Google Wifi point just for the Ethernet port? Maybe. to be honest I don’t know

I asked Google why they made the decision to remove the Ethernet port on Nest Points, and I got the answer I expected: only a small group—about 5 percent—of users actually took advantage of Ethernet. As it turns out, most people just use Wi-Fi for everything. Who knew? Anyway, Google decided it was better to remove this to cut costs, since 95 percent of people don’t need it anyway. Well, I guess. I am 5 percent.

While we’re on the subject of changes, there is another obvious in the Nest Wifi build: the move from USB-C to a barrel port. Once again I asked Google about this benefit. This is largely down to the fact that USB-C is more expensive, so the barrel port is used to keep costs down. That and I say it causes some confusion if / when the user needs to change the power adapter for a Wifi device – some people just grab their old phone chargers and throw them in there, which often does not provide enough power for the power. Wifi. This change makes sense, and honestly, it’s not a big deal. Chances are, you’ll turn it on and never think about it again.

An interesting (and welcome!) change with Nest Wifi is that configuration and control are no longer done in the Google Wifi application – everything is now part of the Home application (iOS, Android). Well, almost everything.

Setup starts in the Home app just like any other modern Google/Nest device, and the process is largely the same as Google Wifi. The Nest Wifi will show up as a device to set up in the Home app, and the process is pretty much automatic from there. You will give your network a name (SSID), a password, and then just let it do its thing. Then you can connect additional points. It’s easy and simple.

During the setup process, you can also set up the guest network and the family network. Although they have similar names, these two things are quite different. A guest network is just that: a network specifically for guests in your home. It’s separate from the rest of your network, so guests can’t get nosy and start poking around on your computer or throw things at your Chromecast.

Unless you want them to be, that is. Once you have a guest network up and running, you can add devices that will share with this network-such as Chromecast, Android TV, other computers, and the like. It’s super cool.

Plus, there’s now a better way to share your guest network password with your family. Instead of telling them or sharing it via text or email, you can just

. How cool is that? If you’re having a party and need to share the password with 24 people, just throw it on your smart display and let them fight over who gets it first. The added bonus is that you can watch them swarming around the display like a pack of wolves on a new kill. Good stuff.

A separate network just for your family. It’s a way to group devices by family members so you can easily pause connection to those devices when needed. So when it’s time for homework, you can unplug little Tommy’s Xbox, PS4, Chromebook, desktop, Android phone, iPhone, Google Home, and any other Internet-connected device you have. And you can do it all with one tap. Then press again to restore the connection. The future is a fun place.

Nest Wifi Review: Why You Should Buy Nest Wifi — The Second Angle

While this is great, I would still like a way to pause individual devices without having to create a family group just for them. I’d like to be able to just pause my kids’ PC games or phones on an individual basis without needing a specific family group, for example.

Almost everything is now managed in the Home app, except for more niche features like port forwarding. They will still live in the Wifi application (iOS, Android) for now, but I said the plan is to eventually move everything to the Home application.

OK, so check this out: you can pause/remove family network devices with your voice too. Since the Nest Wifi has Google Assistant integration and is in the Home app, you can say “Hey Google, pause Timmy’s Wifi” so that neither Timmy nor Tommy can access things (since Tommy’s is set up in the app earlier). This will teach them. And when they’re done with all their homework, you can say, “Hey Google, remove Timmy and Tommy’s devices.” Then they can play Fortnite or whatever.

In my testing, pausing devices works better than restarting them. I was able to pause the device on the first try every time, but it took about five tries (using different labels) to get the Assistant to remove things. And when it worked, I already forgot which sentence actually worked, so I’ll have to do it again next time. Hooray!

But that’s not all you can do with your voice, either—you can tell Assistant to run a speed test (“Hey Google, how fast is my internet?”). Other features seem very limited – you can’t ask it to test your network connection, for example.

At some point, I hope Google adds more voice control features to the Nest Wifi, though I can’t think of anything else I’d like to see added over the top of my head.
