Flip 5 Power – The Flip 5 is a worthy successor to the Flip 4, and if you’re planning on going on a weekend trip or just hanging out in the backyard, it’s definitely worth the asking price.
There aren’t many products that can get universal recommendations. Everything from cars to kitchen knives have plenty of opinions and reviews for people to research before they buy. This is not the case with affordable waterproof Bluetooth speakers. If you’ve wanted a speaker that you can take with you to the beach for years and that won’t break the bank, my answer is to just get the JBL Flip. We spent a few weeks with the JBL Flip 5 after its release and found it to be a great speaker. However, is the newer Flip 6 worth buying?

If there’s one thing the JBL Flip series is known for, it’s being tough. The Flip series started out as splash-proof and eventually made the leap to fully waterproof – and that’s still the case with the new JBL Flip 5. It’s wrapped in a durable fabric that gives it an IPX7 rating, which means: it can survive underwater. in water up to one meter. Both ends of the speaker have strong rubber to protect the exposed bass radiators.
It’s still small enough to fit in a bag and comes with a string, although I’d recommend replacing it with paracord.
On the back of the speaker you’ll find a power and Bluetooth pairing button, as well as a USB-C input for charging the speaker. Both buttons here light up when the speaker is on and connected to a device source. This is a useful feature that I want to use in the built-in fabric play buttons as well. While it’s easy enough to tell which button is which thanks to the slightly protruding button from the fabric, I feel like they would be a lot easier to use in low light if they glowed or at least were painted a different color. While I enjoy the black-on-black look, I think white buttons or another bright color that pops from the speaker would improve readability.
I have a tip here because the JBL Flip 5 is almost as well built as a $100 USD speaker for your next adventure. The speaker has a little loop built into it that comes with a string so you can hang it from things like branches or even showers. Pro tip: If you choose one of these, I suggest ditching the cheap shoelace and replacing it with some sturdy, inexpensive paracord that can come in handy in a hiking emergency.

The design of the speaker hasn’t changed much compared to the JBL Flip 4. The Flip 5 still has a cylindrical shape and is not heavy at all, weighing only 540 grams. Sticking this speaker in the water bottle pocket of any backpack would be ideal. Another underrated thing about the Flip series is that they come in a variety of colors, so whether you want blue, all black, or even pink, you’ll find something to suit you.
You get the standard playback buttons, such as the volume up or volume down buttons, which are marked with plus and minus signs respectively. Then there’s a play/pause button that lets you pause songs or skip to the next song by double-tapping it.
The JBL Portable (iOS/Android) app, formerly known as “JBL Connect,” works with the Flip 5 and other JBL speakers. Here you can equalize the sound with a three-band equalizer, switch the feedback tone, update the firmware and activate the PartyBoost mode. PartyBoost is only useful if you have more than one JBL speaker that is compatible with PartyBoost, unlike JBL Connect+. In other words, you can’t connect the Flip 5 to the Flip 4.
To use PartyBoost, click the dedicated PartyBoost button on the speaker, then you can pair another JBL speaker for stereo sound or even add life to your party. In my experience, just one speaker has been enough for every hike or beach trip I’ve ever been on. If you find you often need a second speaker for your parties, it’s worth investing in something like the JBL Boombox or UE Hyperboom, both of which are giant speakers that should have no problem partying.

It’s more annoying than you want it to be. For example, Flip 4 and Flip 5 cannot be paired with Partyboost. That’s because the Flip 4 uses an older version called Connect+, and JBL doesn’t seem to pay much attention to backwards compatibility. It’s safest to pair the likes with similar ones from the same generation, so for example the Flip 5 with the Charge 5.
Pairing with the JBL Flip 5 hasn’t changed from previous versions and is still just as smooth. All you have to do is:
The connection strength is strong and I had little trouble playing music from the iPhone 11 Pro in my pocket in my apartment. However, if there was a problem, it was one that required the speaker to be turned on and off before playback would resume normally. Twice during testing, the sound just started skipping and stuttering uncontrollably, which was annoying, but thankfully not constant. Simply turning the speaker off seems to fix the problem, but it’s still not something you want to deal with.
Unfortunately, there are no high-quality Bluetooth codecs to speak of, so there was a huge lag when watching YouTube videos. For some reason, the sound never syncs up with what the person is saying, and since JBL removed the 3.5mm input, there’s no real way around this problem. This is a bit of a bummer as you can’t use this speaker with anything that doesn’t have Bluetooth.

JBL claims you can get 12 hours of continuous playback with the JBL Flip 5, and in our testing we got 9 hours and 27 minutes, which isn’t bad at all, but is a little short of the claimed 12 hours. Still, it’s more than enough for an average day at the beach or a good day of walking.
Before you read too much into the polished table, understand that the Flip 5 is an affordable Bluetooth speaker. The transition at 60 Hz is something you can’t just ignore completely, but you have to live with it, no matter what speaker you buy for less than a few hundred dollars. Also, since you’ll probably be using it in less-than-ideal environments: it’s just a measurement of what you’ll get
. It doesn’t always represent what you’re hearing because you’re not listening to that sound in a muted or anechoic environment. You listen to it in your room or in a noisy place like the beach or yard.
The JBL Flip 5 still sounds good enough for what you’ll be using it for, but don’t expect amazing sound.

JBL updated the driver inside the speaker to give it a deeper low end, and the company succeeded, as far as I can tell. JBL wireless speakers tend to push mid-C bass and about 2-8dB lower. The Flip 5 follows that trend, and you’ll probably be happy with the sound without the use of in-app equalizers or other such junk. Take it out of the box and start using it.

The difference is small, and if you’re out and about or at the beach, chances are you’re streaming a low-quality service like Spotify. If you don’t pay attention to the subtleties of the bass, you won’t hear it anyway.
