Amazon has announced a new Echo speaker, although it doesn’t look much different from the outside. After being the centerpiece of the company’s Alexa line, Amazon didn’t introduce a new “regular” model last year. In 2020, they introduced a redesigned Echo with a round shape instead of the previous cylindrical construction. The “regular” Echo is also currently untunable. However, the company says it has improved the audio performance of the high-end Echo Studio and the compact Echo Dot while keeping the same overall design.

The redesigned Echo Studio comes with new spatial audio processing that improves upon Amazon’s previous 3D sound technology. The company says we can expect better stereo sound with “bigger, wider, clarity and presence.” The frequency range has also been updated with midrange clarity and deeper bass. The company’s flagship speaker is now available in a white color option, and the upgraded version will ship on October 20 for $200.

For the Echo Dot, which Amazon says is the best-selling smart speaker in the world, the company has added audio. Amazon explained that it redesigned the interior to accommodate larger speakers, while keeping the size of the device the same as the previous model. The new driver offers twice the bass and clearer vocals of the last Echo Dot, according to the company. Amazon has also updated the Echo Dot with a clock so that the display can display information such as artist, song title and delay time. Accelerometers and new sensors should also improve touch controls – on both models. The Echo Dot will be available for $50, while the watch version is $60, both of which are available for pre-order today and will ship on October 20th. There are also two new Echo Dot Kids options – a kite and an owl – that will be available for $60 when they ship on October 20.

Amazon also announced today that it has packed Eero mesh WiFi technology into its speakers. This means that compatible Echo models can act as range extenders, increasing internet coverage by up to 1,000 square feet per device.

Here we assume that your speaker is turned on, connected to Alexa through your Amazon account, and that you have the Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet connected to the same network as the Echo Studio. Otherwise, set everything up and then go back and follow the routine below to set up the Echo Studio as a Bluetooth speaker.

Find the Alexa app on your mobile device, as you did on your iPad Air, as shown in the following image.

Tap the Alexa app icon to open it. You should see the home page of the application, as shown below.

Now when this screen appears, the Echo Studio is now in Bluetooth pairing mode. So now you can find it on your phone, tablet or other native Bluetooth device. In this demo, we will connect to an iPad Air tablet.

On the tablet, we go to the home screen by pressing and releasing the Home button. This minimizes the Alexa app and displays the home page, as shown next.

Your device may be configured differently. But in this demo, we find the Settings app on the second page of the home screen and tap on it. This takes us to the settings page, where we find the Bluetooth item on the left side of the page and tap on it. The result is the Bluetooth settings page, as shown below.

Tap the found and registered Echo Studio, then establish a Bluetooth connection, as shown below.

To disconnect your mobile device from the Echo Studio, simply turn off Bluetooth on the device or forget the Studio there.

Also note that the Studio Echo acts as a Bluetooth speaker, but still responds to Alexa commands.
