Creative Muvo 2 – Creative Labs is among the top Bluetooth speaker manufacturers right now as they continue to release great sounding speakers at affordable prices. I have tested many Creative products and love every one of them. However, the latest products like the iRoar or the Sound Blaster Roar Pro are not really portable speakers, as they are still a bit bulky and lack a waterproof feature.
A few months ago, Creative Labs announced the two true portable speakers which are the MUVO 2 and the MUVO 2C. I’ve had the opportunity to test the MUVO 2 over the past few weeks and the full review follows.
Creative Muvo 2
The name MUVO 2 might sound familiar if you’re a creative fan. Creative actually released a product called the Nomad MuVo2 a decade ago, but it’s a $199 MP3 player with 4GB of storage. The new MUVO 2 speaker is much cheaper, but it can also act as a standalone music player thanks to the microSD card slot on the back.

This is also why it is more portable than many Bluetooth speakers. You don’t need to rely on your smartphone to play music, just load your music library onto the card and insert it into the speaker, and you can enjoy music anywhere. Another reason to want to use the microSD card is that the speaker supports lossless playback of FLAC and WAV files.
If that’s not convincing enough, Creative has made the MUVO2 dust and water resistant with an IP66 rating. You can not submerge the speaker in water, but it will completely withstand light rain or water splashes.
The speaker has a solid build, although the exterior is made of plastic. It feels great when you hold the speaker because it has a soft-touch finish all over, only the front grill is aluminum. The rubberized finish looks premium, but it can also get scratched and deteriorate in a short time. I’ve already seen a lot of scratches on the case, even though I handle the speakers very carefully.
Connections on the back include a microUSB port, a 3.5mm audio port and a microSD card slot. You can play music through any of them, even through the microUSB port. There is a mode button on top that allows you to switch between audio sources.

The Creative speaker is powered by a 2200 mAh lithium-ion battery. The battery life is rated at 10 hours, and during my test I had no problem using the speaker for a week without charging. I also appreciate that Creative uses the microUSB port for charging instead of a proprietary port.
MUVO 2 is equipped with a large passive bass radiator in the center and 2 full-range drivers on 2 sides. I am quite surprised by its performance considering the fact that it is a compact speaker. At the same time as writing this review, I also tested another waterproof speaker which is the Leeron Outdoor. So I made a video comparing the sound between the 2 speakers.
Can you hear the huge difference between the two? The market for Bluetooth speakers is crowded, but most of them have poor sound quality. While the sound of the Leeron speaker is muffled and dense, the MUVO 2 really shines with a much cleaner and clearer sound. The bass is really good when playing music in a car or in a small apartment. It’s not deep or thunderous bass, but it’s tight and powerful enough to enjoy your music.
The sound characteristics are tilted forward but not too aggressively. Therefore, the vocals are still very present, while the treble is not too bright. The result is a well-balanced sound with a spacious image.

The downside of the MUVO 2 is that it lacks power. This is not a powerful speaker, and you will know that when you put the speaker in your backyard or in a spacious room. This is understandable and something you have to sacrifice to have such a compact size. Fortunately, Creative lets us pair two MUVO 2 speakers together to create a stereo system and double the power. Note that this mode only works via Bluetooth connection and outputs stereo sound, so you cannot place 2 speakers in different rooms.
The MUVO 2 proves that a waterproof speaker can deliver good sound. This is among the best sounding Bluetooth speakers for its size, I highly recommend this product.
