So how do they work? Today I’m looking at the Audio Engine HD3 wireless speakers. Let’s see what they do.

When you open the HD3’s box (which has a handy handle on top), the first thing you see are two microfiber pockets with drawstrings that sit in a layer of soft white foam. Inside the pouch are all accessories and cables. The bag is of good quality, indicating that there is a high-quality product inside. This is a presentation I’ve never seen before and I love it. The speakers also come in the same (albeit larger) microfiber pouch, so you can rest assured that the surface will be clean and scratch-free when you first take them out. A lot is packed into a small box, which is a good thing, because despite the front volume knob, the HD3 provides everything you need to connect and run the system, but the remote is still appreciated. Let’s see what’s inside:
The HD3 is available in three color options: Walnut, Satin Black and Cherry. The unit I received is the Cherry Edition. A layer of wood covers the retro-style speaker body, giving the surface a very nice, smooth finish. There is a removable magnetic grill on the front which is very easy to remove or install. I chose to keep mine to protect the drivers from dust, but if they were removed, it would reveal a 2.75″ Kevlar woofer and a 3/4″ silk dome tweeter. Below the grille is an aluminum trim with AudioEngine branding, and below it is the full-width horizontal front-facing bass port.
At just under 18cm/7in, they’re the perfect size for a tabletop or shelf, and available in a variety of colors and an understated aesthetic, they’ll blend seamlessly with your decor no matter where you place them.
All business terminals have interconnect input ports only on the left side because the left speaker acts as the master speaker and the right speaker acts as the slave speaker. Things get busier behind the left speaker:

It’s really unfair to think of these as just speakers, as there’s a lot going on beyond the 30W peak dual analog Class A/B monolithic amplification per channel. A headphone amp using the D1-derived 24-bit PCM 5102 DAC and OPA2134 low-noise op amp provides a powerful 2-volt output, enough to drive a wide variety of headphones.
The HD3 offers a variety of connectivity options, including Bluetooth 4.0 with OptiX, 3.5mm stereo input, analog RCA input and USB. Also includes an analog output that can be used to connect an external subwoofer.
For most of my testing, I used the computer’s USB connection and it was as easy as plug and play. I found an issue where the HD3 sometimes cuts off the first second of the song when starting from idle. No big deal, but still disappointing.

For kicks, I also connected my Arcam irDAC-II via the analog input and it worked smoothly. This is a very versatile little system.
But Bluetooth also needs testing, for which I connected my Acoustic Research M20 DAP, Benjie T6 DAP, and Galaxy Note 5 smartphones. Pairing is easy and flawless. The range is great and I can walk around the house without any signal interruption unless there is a large wall in the way. The range is up to 30 meters, and the line of sight is unobstructed.
It’s important to note that the HD3 has a bass cut switch, which separates the drivers a bit and provides more clarity and control in the mids. If you’re hooking up an external subwoofer and want to take some stress off the speakers, I’ve found that the tone is more natural with the extra bass turned off, although the sound gets thinner. I spent time switching back and forth between the two modes, but most of the time with the bass mode off, as the mid-bass swell can be a little annoying when the speakers are on, and a little stuffy on busy tracks.
Overall, the HD3 has a punchy sound with an emphasis on the mids. Imaging is great for near-field listening, it looks like it’s floating above my computer monitor, which is what these are designed for. These little boxes also have a great sense of depth.

The frequency response is 65Hz-22kHz ±2.0dB, which isn’t surprising, and they don’t produce a ton of bass, but are good enough to get things wiggling around in a relatively small space. The kick drum is nice, crisp, and of good texture, it’s really just a bit of a low bass, but adding an external subwoofer via the analog output eliminates that. On Dead End Kings’ Katatonia’s “Leach,” the HD3 hits out pleasantly, especially in bass-reduction mode.
That’s what the HD3 sound is all about, so it’s no surprise that they truly excel. The mids are clear and rich, with a natural “what do I have for you?” track with a similar track and her voice is better than Norah Jones’s backing track. When the extra bass is turned on, it can sometimes seep into the mids significantly, which can be distracting.
