Amazon Bluetooth Speaker – The Amazon Basics range of products generally offers good value, so I was interested in trying out a portable Bluetooth speaker.
Inside the box you get the speaker itself, a micro-USB charging cable and an instruction manual. There’s no wall charger, so you’ll have to use your own or charge through your laptop.

I was not bowled over by the build quality or appearance of the speaker. The glossy plastic feels a little cheap, and the design of the grill inset covering the two 3W speakers doesn’t suit my taste. But considering the price point, it’s more than enough.

Starting on the side, there is a power button switch, a micro-USB charging port and an aux-in port. There is no way to pair two speakers.
At the top, there is a selection of useful buttons for volume and track selection and there are function buttons that have several uses. It is used for Bluetooth pairing, pausing music and handling speaker phone functions.
The manual is clear, and you should be up and running in minutes. When the device is turned on, the blue LED flashes ready for Bluetooth pairing. Select the speaker in the Bluetooth settings on your device, and a few seconds later the LED will be solid blue and you will hear a confirmation beep. You can connect the speaker to another device by holding down the function button for a few seconds until the LED flashes again. You can have multiple devices paired, but only one can be connected at any time.
I tried a few tracks of music stream from Deezer, and the speaker has a good range and volume for the price point. There isn’t much distortion even at full blast.

If you receive a call while connected, you can answer the call by pressing the function key. This is not something I personally use, but a feature that many of these speakers have. And it seems that might be enough.
Battery life is quoted as 8 hours which I’m optimistic about, and it might even have a wired connection. Bluetooth is definitely lacking, but I’ll try to report back with accurate measurements. The red light flashes when charging and turns off when fully charged. (

You get a battery life icon with, at least on Apple devices, when connected via Bluetooth which is a nice feature. Although this has only two indications: full or empty. When idle, the LED light on the camera also flashes red (with a strong blue hint).

The biggest disappointment with the speaker is the distance when connected via Bluetooth. The manual recommends keeping it within 30 feet of the speaker, but I found the audio broke beyond 10-15 feet (3-5m). This is about half of what I have experienced from other speakers. I proved that it was a video at the beginning of the article.
I’ve been pretty heavy on this speaker, but it’s actually a decent speaker at a good price. It’s a big step from audio on your phone or tablet, and if you’re looking for a speaker that won’t break the bank, it’s definitely one to consider.
